Saturday Hunt

I took a break from the cane field and hunted a yard next to the woods I usually hunt. This section of Louisiana has been settled in since the Cajuns left Nova Scotia, which could explain how my find. I was hunting with my F75 and hit a good signal, hit a steady 82, thought I had on a quarter but was as wrong as wrong can get. Dug down about 2 inches and it was a big copper coin, got home and cleaned it up best I could and thought I had found a large cent, wrong again. Kept looking to find a match and I found it, a King George III half penny, just don't really know what year it's from, though I thought I saw a 9 on the end of the date, that would make it 1799 if I'm not mistaken

Very interesting, what country would that be from? My first thoughts would be France or England? Seems amazing to find a coin that old just a few inches down.

That is old..and a fantastic find even in the dug condition.... Good job!

The coin would be from England, I think that ground location where the coin was found has had some soil removed in the past. It was found near a low slopping ditch and the coin was laying flat, helping it to keep from sinking so much, the coin is 31mm.

So are you able to see the same thing as I did to see it being a King George III half penny?

No I can't really make it out either..but you could check out the specs on a King George and then measure yours and see if it's close in size.
I was making my statement on the apparent age of your coin. It looks very old.

Here are front and back of a 1799 King George III half penny. Can anyone ID the coin as I did?

Your camera doesn't seem to be able to focus in macro mode making identification impossible for us. There is probably a macro/closeup mode on it that needs to be turned on.

If its indeed 1799 half penny it's an awesome find.

Really can't tell much from the photos due to being so out of focus but if it is what you think it is .... That's totally amazing !!! Congrats on the find and I hope you can get a good ID.
