Back once again with a major haul from Saturday's outing......something that I thought was going to be just the opposite for finds. Let's get started.
Saturday, Tim and I headed back to the Park we found that was giving up Wheats in the teens and twenties along with a few Silver that was just as old that we didn't get to hunt very long last weekend. As we headed back to this spot, I noticed the clouds were starting to get pretty dark to the south and asked Tim if he had checked the weather to see what it was going to do on Saturday. He told me that there was chances for rain and it was looking more and more like it the further we drove. Shortly after, it started to sprinkle and by the time we got to the site, it was raining just enough to make it a not so pleasant start for the day.
We started in a different Park first, just to see if there was anything here since this first Park was started around 1900. We hunted this Park for about 2 hours and we both were getting pretty soaked since the rain was coming down much harder now. In those 2 hours, I was able to find 2 Indian Heads, a few Wheats, and a 1914-d Barber Dime. Tim found only a few Wheats here so he was off to a slow start like I was. It was around noon before we decided to go give a different Park a try. I told Tim that we needed to find something soon since it was getting so late in the day and I felt like we were going to have a bad day out detecting since it didn't look like the rain was going to stop anytime soon. Shortly before we left, the rain stopped and from then on it turned out to be a decent day without anymore rain while we detected.
The second Park was a huge one and it was impossible to even know where to start looking. We hunted this for about an hour and the only thing that I found was a Mickey Mouse Ring and no Old Coins. Tim didn't find anything here and due to the size of this Park, we soon gave up and decided to head to the Park we wanted to hunt at. By now it was a little after 1:00pm and I still only had the 1 Silver and Tim still was Silverless......but that was soon to change.
We arrived at the Park we were finding the Wheats and a few Silver at last weekend to find a bunch of people fishing in the general area where the coins were located before. We decided to drive across the bridge and check out a Camp Site that had a Ball Diamond located here also. This had to be part of the Park at one time due to the trees being just as big and it being situated on the other side of the river. We started hunting this for a bit. I found a Merc with 4 Wheats here and Tim couldn't find much but a Wheatie or 2. We then headed back over to where the people were fishing but stayed mainly in the Park area until they left. There was even Old Coins here in the Park and it didn't take me long to nab a Merc with a few Wheats and 2 Indian Heads. I told Tim that I had just found some stuff where I was and he told me he had found a couple Wheats. We continued hunting for awhile in this location until Tim came over to me and told me we should go where the people were fishing at. I looked up and seen they had all gone into the Park Shelter to eat so we headed over to this spot where we knew the really old stuff was being found at. We started hunting this and this thing was loaded with Old Coins......all averaging 10"-12" Deep.......some barely even audible enough to get a good enough signal to know something was there. We worked and worked this spot and the Coins were coming out at a decent rate, and they were Old! I got a Deep 27-28 on Digital in a little recessed area next to the river bank and thought it was a Deep Wheatie or possibly a Silver Dime. I dug down and about 12" Deep out pops a 1918-s Walking Liberty Half Dollar. I covered the hole and went to show Tim what I had just found. I asked him if he was finding much and he told me he had found a Merc or 2 along with a few Wheats. I then told him I had found 2 or 3 Merc's, 2 Indians, a few Wheats, and then showed him the Walker. Alright he said to me and I told him now it was his turn to find one. We started to hunt again and the finds kept comin'. Tim was working one section that seemed to be just loaded with stuff since he was digging a lot here. I let him work it for quite awhile and then I decided to see if he left me any scraps. 1st thing I dug was a Merc. About 8' from here, I got another 28 and dug down. Another Merc! I then asked Tim just how much Silver he was finding here and he said he wasn't finding anything but Pennies and 1 Merc there. He then told me he had Silver blocked out in a joking matter but was soon just the opposite. I told him I had just picked up 2 Merc's and he couldn't believe it. I then rescanned my plug and another signal. I told Tim there was another signal in the hole and he says "let me see that!". He came over and scanned it with his E-Trac and the signal was a bit broken up but he was getting a signal also. Tim opens up the plug and digs some dirt out. As he pulled some dirt out, we both seen another Silver Dime fall back into the hole and get covered up. Tim reaches in and pulls it out. A Merc.......NO...........2 Merc's! I said ALRIGHT!!!! Tim then probes the hole and nothing. He then checks the dirt pile and another signal. Another Merc!!! Rechecks the dirt and nothing. He was in shock to see that 4 Merc's were in that one hole and I was also. I started to put the dirt back and as I grabbed the plug and put it in place, I seen a 5th Merc hiding behind the plug. I shouted to Tim.....Another Merc!!!!! Tim just shook his head and couldn't believe that I just got 5 Merc's in 1-hole!!! The dates on those Merc's were 1917-s,1920-d,1936-s,1941-s and 1942-d. 6 Merc's in a spot he had just been and only in about 3 minutes time! Now that is some serious Silver in a hurry!!!!! Tim couldn't figure out why he missed the Merc's. I figured that he hit the target from the wrong angle since there was Iron just in front of the 5 Merc's in 1 hole. He then agreed that could have been it. Shortly after this, I got another 28-30 and called Tim over again. I told him it was Silver and he scanned it with the E-Trac. The signal was there but it wasn't coming in that well. Before I dug this, Tim went and got his Se out of the car since he wanted to see how it picked up the Deep Coins here. He swung over the target and it came in a lot better. I dug it and another Merc showed it's face. Tim then decided to switch his Probe and Headphones over to the Se and use that since something had to be wrong with the E-Trac. Tim found out later at home that he must have reset the E-Trac or did something since his settings were all wrong and he figures this is why it wouldn't pick up the Coins. So we will find out next weekend if that is what it was. Anyways, I told Tim now just watch, you'll start kickin' my a$$ with the Se and shortly after I said this, he got a 1893-O Barber Quarter, 1905 Barber Dime and a 1883 V-Nickel with Cents and Full Liberty....all in 1 hole. I told Tim he just tied my Quarter for the month and beat my Nickel all in 1 hole and he chuckled about it. We continued hunting pulling more Keepers until it got dark out. Tim ended up getting a Silver Quarter, 2 Barber Quarters, 2 Barber Dimes, 4 Merc's, 2 Rosie's, a V-Nickel, 3 Indian Heads, and 45 Wheats on Saturday. Last Silver I dug was a 1894-O Barber Quarter. I got an amazing 20 Silver and I thought at first I was going to be lucky to even get 5 with the way the weather was in the morning. Just goes to show that it could turn around in a flash and that's exactly what happened here. One heck of an outing and my car didn't get full of mud like I thought it was going too. Good Job with all them Keepers Tim! Now for what I got for totals on Saturday.
20 Silver were found on Saturday as follows. 1 Walking Liberty Half Dollar dated 1918-s, 1 Barber Quarter dated 1894-O, 2 Barber Dimes....one being a No Dater and the other 1914-d and 16 Merc's dated 1916-s,1917-s,1918-s,1920-d,1923,1929,1936-s,1937,1938-d,(2)1941-s,1942,1942-d,1943-d,1944 and 1945. Now that is a Ton Of Silver!!!! I was able to dig 2 Nickels. They are 1 Buffalo Nickel dated 1913 Variety 2 and 1 Jefferson War Nickel dated 1945-d. I also dug 11 Indian Heads and they are dated 1886,1895,1899,1900,1901,1902,1904,(3)1905 and 1907. Wheats consisted of 52 of them.
