School of Barber's

Mark in S.E. IA

Thur night I started working a field that once had a farm house there. Just the end rows were cut and most of the old yard was in that area. I found a nice 1906 V nickel and 3 wheat's that night. I'll work the rest of that field when the rest of the beans are taken out.

Fri night after work I got permission to do a 1 room school house/field. The first thing I dug was a IH and I'm thinking to myself,,,, Oh this is going to be good,, I bet it was a good hour before I found another IH and then a lil while later I found 2 IH's about 3 foot apart, then I found a 1892 V nickel. Just before dark I found the prize find of the day. I got a 1902 Barber Quarter.

Sat morning I went back to finish the 1RSH and I found 2 wheat's, a 1907o Barber Dime and another prize find, a 1898s Barber Quarter. I also found the smallest pedal bell that I have ever found. It's not very often when I do a 1RSH and all the silver coins are Barbers.

That would have got my heart to pumping finding all that. Congratulations.

Nice finds Mark. Barbers and IH cents are amongst my favorites! They were just starting to run the combines around here this past week, and it rained. Wouldn't you know it? We went over 60 days straight this summer, without rain. And now that it is harvest time, we get rain, wind and temps near 40 degrees. It is suppose to get back into the 70's this week. Hopefully it does, so the farmers can get back in the fields. HH Randy

Sweeeeeeeeeet Barbers!! :clapping: Congrats!!

Sure is nice ot find a hot spot every now and then! Congrats!

Good stuff Mark. If there is one thing I love more than hunting those country schools, it is rescuing a family of Barbers, surrounded by Indians. HH Randy

And a crotal bell. From the coins I would guess the bell is late 1800s. Crotal bells have a long history. If you Google "UKFD crotal bell" you can read up on them. UKFD is the UK finds database, there is a lot of info there.

I found my 2nd crotal bell today, 3rd if you count a large fragment of one. Zip on the coins though just a handfull or lead shot and 2 fired rifle bullets and a 69 caliber ball.
