SE and Periscope Wireless Now

Dan(NM)

Well-known member
I've been using a periscope probe with an Explorer on and off for the last 4 years, one of the problems was the cord going from the periscope to the Explorer would malfunction plus you have wires dangling all over the place. Jim Ott used straight jacks instead of the angled ones and after so many hours of strain, the wires would of course, break inside the harness. I just bought another periscope and did all I could to contact Jim for some extra parts, cords, probe ...etc. He can't be found as far as I can tell. Anyway, I saw the wireless headphones at Kellyco and did a search and found the same ones on e-bay. I bought one to check it and they work pretty good for what I paid for them. They don't fit as tight nor are they as quiet as the brands we all are used to using, but for $30, not bad.
I got to thinking that maybe I could eliminate the cord going from the periscope as well. I bought another pair of phones just to get the transmitter. I had tried 10-15 times to call the manufacturer and the lines were always busy, I wanted to try and buy just the transmitter from Macally, but they're impossible to reach on the phone.
I wanted to run both transmitters at the same time and switch the periscope back and forth from detector to scope using the toggle on the periscope, but, that didn't work. I found that by turning off the transmitter on the periscope while running the detector, the one on the machine works great. When I get ready to fire up the periscope, I can turn the transmitter on the detector off and turn the one on the scope on and it picks up the headphones no problem. I know it sounds time consuming, but, it only takes a couple of seconds to go back and forth from machine to the periscope. Here's a picture of the setup. No more cords dangling around or crapping out. I will keep my regular phones and the cord handy for back-up though on my maiden voyage in an actual hunt.

Dan,
I have a question, I'm a long ways from a rocket scientist so I hope you don't hold this question against me. Because the phones a wireless, they send a signal so my question is, doesn't the headphone signal interfere with the detector signal? Jeff

Actually, the transmitter in the headphone jack sends the signal from the detector to the headphones. The headphones pick up the signal 20-30 ft from the machine.

I'm a huge periscope fan also. And the wiring harness can be a pain. I've replace the cables a few times. I had a probe repaired this summer and Jim said it was the last repair part he had. He did say he was going to try set up some kind of repair service. Not sure if that has happened yet.

Let us know how it works in the field.

Chris
