SE better on nickles?

I have only had my SE out a few times but it seems to be better on nickels. My recover rate is up dramatically. Grant it that there are only clad nickels but I didn't use to dig very many with my EX II. I don't know if I'm just coiling over more or if its truly better in that area. Anyone else with a SE notice this?

Yes i have noticed the same. Never owned the EX2, but i know for sure the SE is better with nickles then XS.

Gain + Factory Pre Set Sensitivities have been increased.
Gain is now set @ 8 - a higher setting (by 3 points) from where it was set at in both former Explorer XS & ll models.
Pre Set Sensitivity is now set @ 22 - a higher setting (by 6 points) from prior Explorer models.

The "extra" sensitivity might become noticable right away as certain signals could be more pronounced with better, faster (especially in Pitch Hold Mode) louder and sharper signal sounds when compared to the older Explorer models.
Gain actually controls the [amplification] of target responses in respect to [the strength of the original signal].
With a higher setting of 8 even weak target responses will initially be, easier to hear.
This could equate to more finds - especialy those small "elusive" low-conductive ones (nickels, rings etc) at the end of a day's detecting and/or incresed [deeper] finds from well worked sites or sites considered to be "worked out" (testing all year round has proven to me that a site is NEVER worked out!)
At a Detecting Rally event in the UK where we unveiled the new SE, ten minutes after handing a guy the SE for a try out he dug a 2000 yr old silver Celtic coin from 13" from a field that has been pounded by up to 80 detectorists for the past 5 years! The coin was about one cent size and he described it as "a gentle whisper of a signal".
On the other side of the coin if you are looking for modern / recent losses say, after an outdoor park concert manually REDUCE Gain and reduce Sensitivity to concentrate on surface or just beneath surface targets. During prototype tests of Explorer SE a circus field and a concert field gave up a staggering quantity of recent coin losses.

Can you explain how DEEP differs from turning the gain up since they both amplify small signals. I usually run my gain at 6 with DEEP on. I know air testing is not a good test but I cant really tell a difference with it on or off. The gain on the other hand is very noticeable as you turn it up.

then I have found in 6 months with the II model. I will also say that silver coins sound more round on the II then the SE, maybe Minelab made the SE more hot on brass and nickle which made it alittle less sensitive on silver. Watch out Tejon user's the SE is a better relic unit then the II and still be able to hunt in a mass of pulltabs and crowncaps.
