ok first i know minelabs work great my dad bought a safari around christmas and it works great but heres my problem i bought a refurb explorer se from minelab and of course ive been reading the posts bought andys book
read it but i have nothing to base what is going on with it, if it is functioning correctly or not im an avid detectorist i hunt almost every day and my outher machine is a whites xlt im not the best detetorist in the world but i use it pretty well i think i find alot off goodies i might just be lucky i dont know but i got this explorer and believe me i want it to work well but so far it is so bouncy i cant get a good signal it seams and pinpointing is a joke if there are too target by each outher of course it bounces but just getting a solid signal is tough it bleeds the signal to the side so much that when i pinpoint im hitting usually a totally diffirent target i turned the sensitivity down still the same deal i put a coin on the ground on my lawn and there are no outher targets within a foot it will give me a ok signal but if its in the ground and anouther coin is within 8 inches it singing al lover i take it slow in factory presets taking the sens down to 18 still bounces back and forth i have found good stuff with it but it take me 20 minutes of wiggling and swinging to get its exact location so i can pin point it, i take my whites with me and crank it up amd when it finds somthing good i turn my whites on and pull the coil over it mabey 3 swings and im done im extremly frusterated and exousted i bet i have 30 to fourty hours on it all ready and it is driving me nut

[size=large]i am with ya on the frustration meter. since you have some experience then i can assume you have put your XLT in relic mode and pushed the toggle switch forward, locking it in all metal and have checked your test site for all and any metal. then you went and buried maybe a clad qtr., a clad dime and maybe a clad penny. a few feet apart.i know disturbed soil may read differently but you are just checking to see if the machine will find and id correctly.. these holes you made were 6" down. a good average depth for both machines. then you checked with your minelab. if it didn't work then your whites will find your coins again so you didn't lose them. would seem to be enough posting has gone on in the last two months for us newbies to tell you what and maybe how to look i'm sure it's gunna be asked about where all this testing took place.and checking the ground around your test area. each newbie has been asked the same questions and told the same answers in the last two months. i'd say review the responses and see if you missed anything. i'm not the brightest penny but i am slowly getting the hang of the machine. i did a little back-up with my XLT also. confirming targets etc. if your machine checks out then it's just gunna be taking some serious time and concentration to learn it.you made a pricy purchase. before and if you throw in the towel ya wanna be sure about it. ya get spoiled on the XLT.
you'll make the best choice for yourself. just remember, you ain't alone.

Locate the target wiggle it back until its on the tip of your coils.... you will hear it disappear. Its at the tip of your coil or a little further back on deep targets. I rarely use the pinpoint. Trick to pinpoint is to locate the target... raise the coil put it in pinpoint then lower it over the target. I used the DFX for several years and this machine is MUCH simpler. I do miss the sizing and trigger on the DFX. Learn to start raising your coil a bit of the ground and use the SMARTSCREEN... the digital screen will drive ya nuts. Then dig dig dig testing and watching the smartscreen.

If you know of any other explorer users who could help you confirm wether or not there is something wrong with it or if what you're experiencing is typical explorer behavior it would be a big plus. If there is something wrong then Minelab should stand behind it but it may take a while to get it back. I'm sure you dropped a nice chunk of change on it and you deserve a unit that, at the very least, functions properly but be sure that something's not right before sending it back. Good luck & HH

all of you are ausome for your help well i went out with the old silverback today and he has a sarari so i traded him coils and it worked great it hit hard and there was still a little bounce but nothing like it was doing but now my question is my dads coil is the sef coil and mine is the slimline is there really that much diffrence or is mine defective

o i found a nice little gold lapel /broach pin this town was abandon in 1930 and through a relitive i found the exact location of the main store lots of goodies

[size=large]i would say the SEF coils are better. they are made with thicker coil wire. watched a demo on you tube and the 11" ml was weaker. found the target but the SEF soiunded off a lot better on the same target. jmo

The first slimlines that came out with the SE MAY have had problems. A lot of very good hunters complained. ML never admitted there was a problem but those after worked better IMO. I have one of the earliest models and mine works fine... but the SEF works MUCH better. Quieter, better separation, with less bounce and cheaper than the Pro. It will pay for its self.

I have been using the se for about a year now.at first it drove me nuts but now I would not trade it for nothing. After reading andy' s book four or five times and countless hours of videos and slowly adjusting and tweaking it is on and hot on silver.don't give up all my friends hunt with whites and I dig less junk and more good stuff on a daily basses. If it hits solid and it holds the signals dig it.hh

As I understand it, the S.E.F. coils are made by Detech Technologies -- an "aftermarket" coil with versions made for use with the Explorer/Etrac machines (and versions for other metal detectors).
