se question

teleman2525

New member
seem to be having trouble with my depth indications most hits are reading at about half way down on the meter even on shallow coins went to factory reset and tried the iron mask stock setting as its set up and still got the same readings did not do this at first but seems to have started last couble of days not shure if this effects more over all depth ability or not less the year old se pro got through kellco last fall realy don,t want to send it in this time of year no back up detector to us boo ho

Good question teleman2525. I have noticed that my depth readings are not what they should be on my SE as well and hope this isn't a serious problem. Maybe some of the fellows might have some ideas as to what might be causing what I would call false depth readings.

Hey teleman -- very funny that you say that; mine seemed to be "off" today on shallow stuff, too -- more than I've ever noticed before. I hit a nice tone today, showed about half way on the depth meter; called my partner and his E-trac over, and he immediately said "you have a dime on the surface." Sure enough, I did. ??? A bit later, got another good coin hit; called him over -- and again he said, it's on the surface. He put his pro-pointer to the ground, and sure enough, it sounded off. I ran back over the target it with my machine -- and told him to look at my depth meter (to show him I wasn't crazy!). It was past halfway...

Later in the day, I hit some deep coins, and it read them just find. It's those shallow coins that were reading deep, that were the problem. Strange that we both noticed that on the same day (maybe it's that "end of the world" thing that is supposedly happening today...)

Seriously, though...I'm going to keep an eye on mine -- and will be interested to see if anyone else has had this happen.

Only other thing I'll say is, while today seemed to be something different, I have had it happen several times in the past on a shallow coin -- where I'll catch the coin, unknowingly, with the outer edge of the coil (instead of the "sweet" zone down the middle). Don't know if you are using a Pro coil or not, but mine is really hot around the "rim" of the coil -- the "rim" of the coil picks up shallow targets. On a shallow target, when I sweep across, I actually get three hits -- one as the edge of the coil passes over it, one as the center "sweet zone" passes over it, and then one more as the other edge of the coil passes over it. On occasion, I have caught a coin with the outer edge of the coil and THOUGHT I had it with the center of the coil; when this happens, the ID is good, but the depth shows it to be a "deep" coin. So, I dig a deep plug, find no target, and wonder what is going on?! This has happened enough times that I have now learned that when I dig a plug and find no target, to at least check a few inches radius around my plug with my pro-pointer -- and occasionally, I find the coin 6" or so to the side of my plug, and inch or so deep. It's that "hot edge of the coil" thing that causes the issue -- and like I say, when you do hit a shallow target with the outside edge of the coil, the target reads much deeper than it actually is.

just to add when using bryce,s coin program with high gain i do get false shallow depth readings and thats probly to be expected back off gain would usualy fix this the i,ld also but deep on back in play but today didn,t seem to matter opps end of world lol but i will be watching this closely

Happens to me too, all the time, will try less gain.

Thats pretty common to have shallow targets NOT register properly with in a couple of inches from the surface. On many machines you can tell just by how loud the tones are because they may not have a limiter. On the ML with the limiter its a little more difficult when using high gain... but i can still normally tell im not dealing with a deep target. Also coils not matched to the detector like the standard coil often gives false readings.
