Sea Hunter and Infinium. What is the real world difference?

I may have a chance to get into some salt water this year. Been looking at VLF's. But just started to look at the PI's. In just reading the literature it seems to me the Sea Hunter has just as much or more usable features than the Infinium? Who has compared the two machines in the field?

Well, they are actually quite different. I owned both. Both get great depth and do well in areas where there is not too much junk such as hunted out beaches or deeper water. The Discrimination in the Sea Hunter is limited, and you will lose a lot of depth if you crank that up. However, you will probably dig all targets in deeper water anyway. The audio on the sea Hunter is loud, so you may want to put in an extra piece of foam in the headset.

Now the Infinium can be ground balanced, a good operating frequency can be chosen if you are getting any type of electric interference. The Infinium gives a high-low signal over iron and gold. It gives a low-high signal over silver, copper and again iron. So, you do get some discrimination with the Infinium. The Infinium also has an Iron check on it, which helps considerably. But, you pay for those extra bells and whistles. Both machines will give a double bleep on wire and bobby pins. Both machines work well using the 8"mono coils.

PI's will get greater depth in salt water then VLF's. you tend to dig more targets using a PI. But 'you also get the deep gold rings that the VLF's miss. I have 3 water machines (infinium + 2 x VLF) The Infinium is a keeper.

So, if you are going to hunt at beaches pounded out regularly, or hunt out in the deeper surf, both machines will serve you well. But the Infinium just has a few extras to help you ID your targets. Good luck with your choice. :)

Thanks John, I respect your input. I have used a 2 frequency VLF in the salt and had some good success (CZ) I borrowed it from my brother. I went out knee deep and found 2 rings. I couldn't get any deeper because of the waves. Plus his machine was not water proof. I guess I'm not exactly after depth. I may hunt in the salt once in every 4 years so I think I would pass on the deeper machines and opt for more disc. I was just throwing it out there. I'm still pondering. I may just waterproof a dual freq. detector? Too bad my "lake looter" won't work in the salt water!!!

I'd like to see another water-proofed machine. It's another spinnoff hobby from metal detecting. good luck khouse! :)

It seems like any VLF that's OK in the salt is pretty pricey. I might just have to buy a darn factory unit?

Or keep borrowing one. Use your own MD'er for dry sand and if things look right, rent one. You are "tecky" and would catch on to it fast. There are some big hunkers in the dry sand. I lived near the beach and saw them. Watch the party people at night and go there the first thing the next morning. I know a guy that found a "big"gold chain with a ring on it in two inches of dry sand. I believe you will find jewelry faster and more things in the dry sand when the people leave the beach at 4 PM.

On that note of renting, I use to rent a pontoon boat about 3 times a year. It cost me about $150 a trip, but was cheaper than paying for insurance, boat payments, docking fee's and maintenance. I have seen people buy them and leave them park most of the time.

That's a thought John. My brother has a CZ5 and it's not waterproof. I would hate to get it wet. I may just wait and see if we are going to Florida this summer before I get too excited. Now my favorite beaches here in Missouri are closed due to high water. So I'm getting a little grumpy!
