Hi, Got out for 2 hours yesterday at a spot that I'd never been to. A little disappointed that there were no old coins, but finally got a respectable hit at about 6". I dug down and it still was not there, but the X-1 said it was deeper, so I knew it was something interesting. At 9 - 10" I pop the top of an old oil burning lamp - the part with the wick screw intact and part of the assembly (I recovered about four pieces).
The reeded wick screw with four sprockets on it's axis on clean-up reads:
CRYSTAL LIGHT
PAT APR[IL] 26, 1870
SEPT 19, 1871
SEPT 24, 1872
Very cool old relic - I know everyone here likes coins, but to me these old relics speak volumes and I enjoy finding them more than an old coin. I'll try to get some pics up a little later tonight. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone has any info/links for this company and/or old lamp.
Across the street it was sparse again, but near the edge of the area I was detecting I get a nice clean quarter hit at 6-7". Figured it was a good chance that it was silver so I dig a nice big plug and pop it over. I look at the bottom of the popped plug and I see a silver reeded edge at a dead 90 degrees - the quarter was sticking half way out of the plug. I'd never seen a coin so perfectly perpendicular before...so I walked back to my car to grab my iPhone and I snapped a couple pics. When I can figure out how to get the pics off the darn thing (I had iTunes on another drive that crashed) I will post as a coin in situ at dead 90 is rare. Turns out to be a '37 D quarter.
I rescanned the area after replacing the plug and I get another hit a couple inches off to the side that turns out to be a Canadian cent - 1972 - at about 4". I was surprised at how cleanly the quarter dead on edge hit and the pinpoint was right on (maybe because it was totally perpendicular as opposed to a slight angle)....I was also surprised the shallower Canadian cent didn't compromise the signal (or do you think it helped - but the Smart Screen definitely read quarter).
A sparse couple hours for finds, but an interesting hunt for sure!
