I know this isn't about detecting, but a few of you may remember a couple of posts back in 2007 about my brother Geoff's attempt to swim the English Chanel. He had to battle against a 5m(15 foot) swell in that attempt (that's what it was 6 hours before he took off at 11:30 at night only 30 Min's before his deadline) but managed to swim 12kms before abandoning that attempt.
I just received an email from him, he's in England again, and everything is now set for his second attempt. as soon as the conditions are right, he's off! So hopefully in the next few days, I'll be able to report of a successful swim. I know this isn't about detecting, but it's a bit hard not to say anything about it as it's not exactly a small deal.

That is a very big deal Mick. I hope your brother pulls it off and safely. I'm pulling for him. Good luck Geoff !

Can we fit him with a magnatometer? Now we are not off topic. Very cool.

But I am cool with that, AND we have discussed using Micks brother for locating wrecks. So... now we are back on topic, quite a feat let us know how he does Mick.

Wow Mick thats a bit further than swimming across the Macquarie river

hope he goes well.

Thanks All.
I won't push the friendship too far, so I'll refrain from making further comment till I hear whether he succeeds or fails. It may take a couple of days. It will come down to having the right conditions.
Cheers.

My brother has just made his attempt on swimming the Chanel. Unfortunately, due to increasing swells, he was forced to abandon his swim 11 hours ago at the half way point. Things were looking good at the start, but as conditions change so rapidly, it's easy to see why only 18% of all attempts are successful. He was body surfing some of the waves out there at times, but in the end, the surf got to big and wore him down.
There were 2 other attempts going on at the same time. There was an American lady called Dorie Miller, who was attempting a double crossing. She was successful at the first half, but had to abandon due to the same reasons and there was another Aussie bloke called John Van Wisse who was attempting a triple crossing. He got to France in 9 hours, but it was 24 hours before he managed to swim back to England. I was getting reports that he was doing it real tough on the return swim. He also abandoned his attempt after he got back to England. What a magnificent way to fail!!!! I take my hat off to all of them for showing what the human spirit can do when you apply yourself to something hard.:stretcher:

Thanks for the info Mick. It's good to hear about other people's endeavours. Getting halfway in big swells is no mean feat. But tell him that next time, he doesn't have to carry an X Terra just so you can mention it on the forums.

Apparently he does Furious. I thought folks would be interested from a human interest side of things, but they're not, so I'll let them go play with their detectors and stay in there own little world. I'm sure he'll give it another shot, but I'll only mention it on the Aussie forum that we both know about. At least there were a couple here that showed some interest.

Hey now,
I was interested, and the title did say "off subject"

Too bad he had to abandon his try. Takes a lot of balls to start a swim of that nature.

Hey, I was interested too. It takes big uh!! feet to even get into the water, much less into rough seas. My hat is off to your brother.

Thanks for posting Turnmaster and Skippers. Sorry about that. After Gambler13's comment and the fact that next to know one read the follow up, I drew the conclusion, that Gambler13 had about summed up the general out look here, which really surprised me. I was also somewhat peeved at an article in the Daily Telegraph yesterday (one of Sydney's 2 major news papers) that tried to compare Jon Van Wisse's swim to the World Sauna Championships that cost the life of Vladimir Ladyzhensky. (page 4:geek:. It took up most of the page. I have no idea of what was going through his head. The two events are worlds apart from a common sense perspective. So my apologies for coming across a bit cranky.
On a better note. Jon's remarkable attempt got the attention of the prime time national news services here and although I missed the story all together, from what I heard from others, it was a good story and there was a passing comment on the others who were also trying to swim across the Chanel that day.
I know Geoff isn't going to give up till he succeeds, so if you like, I'll post about it, when he finally succeeds. Due to all the preparations and costs, it'll probably be a couple of years before he tries again. His first attempt was in 2007. Only 18% of all attempts succeed, so there is no guarantees, which only makes the final success, so sweet when it is achieved.
Mick Evans.
