Seems a lot are liking the AT Gold better than the AT Pro, was out hunted

Seems that way anyway. Is the AT Gold running smoother, hitting harder? Maybe going same depth or deeper than AT Pro?

I sent my AT Pro in for the update. I've been using it all summer and was happy with it till just recently. I was hunting with a friend who has a Minelab Advantage and over 3 days he found 30 wheats and a 1 merc to my 5 wheats. I was wasn't happy. One thing though he was constantly having me check targets to see what they were so I didn't get to detect as much. I would check them and say yup thats a coin. Could be just luck, being in the right spots. But still I wasn't happy with my 5 wheats.

Anybody have this happen to them?

I had the 5", 8" & WOT coil for it. I found the AT Pro much more machine then the Musky. The Musky was very good at IDing rusty bottle caps by increasing the swing speed of the coil, but other then that, the AT is much more sensitive to a wider range of targets in the soil in Edmonton. It's depth was decent, but still, the AT Pro would do much better, especially with the 9" x 12" concentric coil. On the negative side...the Musky was one of the worst detectors that I had ever used for detecting Canadian coinage. There was no audio variation to ID them other then nails. I would go hunting with by buddies, and come back with some decent finds at times. But my buddies with their machines got the good finds PLUS a lot of common coinage. The AT Pro, the audio combined with the VDI allows it to get a high probability as to whether it's a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, loonie or toonie. It was one of few that I let go a couple of years back. It also had knobs on it, which I believe are very old technology. They get stuck in very cold temperatures, tend to get dirt in them causing interference and are a hazard when the machine takes a fall for bending or breaking.

As for target comparisons...both machines would hit the same targets. The AT Pro would just give much more information about a target. Why someone gets more finds? Probably knows his machine very well. We have all seen someone with a cheap detector regularly swamp someone with a high end detector. Skill + luck = SUCCESS!

Try and detect on your own for a few hunts and remember this, the A T Pro is one of the

best detectors you can buy, I know, because I bought two of them and they both work

What does that tell you if someone using a different machine needs your help to identify a target. I had the same thing happen to me while hunting with my x ( Whites lover) hunting buddy. He swore by his machine but forgot I was identify his targets with my 1500. Anyway I spent some time walking to his place then back to the last spot I was detecting. Also I think your friend was just in the right place at the right time.Its not like his machine was detecting more targets and yours was inferior. He didn't, he relied on yours. I'll be buying a AT Pro in the spring. Don't need it now winter is coming.

Long story short! I once was into law enforcement a long ago when I was gainfully employed. I always qualified with the S&W Model 66 we carried between NRA Expert and Distinguished Expert.

My Stupidvisor was a real horse's butt..couldn't shoot worth a ....anyways on a timed trial, he exited his vehicle and shot off the hood for a rest at a metal 25 yard silhouette target and missed it both rounds. He immediately looked at his service revolver like it had done something WRONG and said " there is something wrong with this gun". I said let me see it, and proceeded to hit the target 4 times off hand double action before it hit the ground. I handed his weapon back to him and never said a word to him as the other officers grinned like 'possums eating persimmons.

The moral of the story being there was nothing wrong with his gun, nor is there anything wrong with your AT Pro depth-wise.....it was seeing the targets that your buddy had you checking out for him, so it clearly wasn't a depth issue going on with the detector. Seems to me that he just managed to get his coil over top the coins before you did.


I've never detected with anybody, but it seems to me your "friend" must be a newbie of sorts with that Advantage if he wanted assurance that what he had found was a coin, like some kind of Doctor's 2nd opinion.

My diagnosis is a severe case of Wheatus centus envisious...........

LOL, thank you everybody. That makes me feel a lot better. After using the AT Pro all summer and lovin it. Then this 3 day hunt made me think of getting a different detector. Sometimes we take things out of proportion. I'm back on track again. Might even pick up an AT Gold next year.

9"x12" concentric is working well?

Wonder what Garrett is up to with future detectors?
