SEF 10 X 12 coil problem

I got a SEF 10 X 12 a while back, been using it on every hunt. But now having a problem with it reading beer cans to the sides of the coil. Today went to a new lot kept getting signals in the silver range and it would be a flatten out beer can a inch under ground and up to a foot to the out side of the coil. It seems to throw a signals outwards from the sides of the coil. Really making it hard to hunt in trashes areas. Back down on the gain and sensitivity still no help. In trashes areas it is all over screaming out signals. Small pull tabs and bottle tops no problem, but a beer can, even in cut up pieces will a false signals even in pin point mode. Made my best find with it 2 weeks ago with a 1912 V nickle, but the lot was pretty clean, other than a couple of under ground pipes that I couldn't hunt around. I am starting to wonder if any one else is have these problems with their SEF coil. Even trying hunting in all metal mode. Starting to think I got a bad coil.

Most coils will pick up large objects to the sides, especially if they are shallow, at times its a good thing as you could pass by something interesting just at the edge of your pass. Maybe its just a coincidence that you have never picked up one before as there haven't been any, mine does it all the time.

Coils do create a HALO around them picking up even book eyelets if you arent careful. Most coil that go deep also have this halo. Let me guess its hitting to the right rear of the coil? Mine seems to like that area.... thats why i always say the most important thing to do with the Explorer is to ensure you are over the target. If you raise your coil you know right away its a LARGE target. Also you can tilt the tip and pinpoint easier. If you have the SE and switch to pinpoint right away BANG you know its a large target. Ive found running my coil at 24 is perfect along with a 9 gain.... but yes it loves large aluminum. Nothing wrong with you coil... i had it with the MXT and other machines ive used when using a larger coil.

I am going back to this field today and giviving it another try. But yeastrday it won't pin point around these flatten beer cans. When I go to Pin Point it would sound like it was over a garbage can lid, screaming like my exwife. It just wouldn't settle down. Thanks for the pointers will let ya'll know if it still does it.

sounds like you may be in sizing with the pinpoint rather than normal, thats what sizing is for to determin the large from the small

oops my mistake, disregard if its an explorer not the etrac

Like i said to avoid that loud blast just raise your coil.... if its a big target you will continue to get a tone almost knee high on those pesty lids or cans. After awhile you can tell just by the sound you have a large shallow target. Im hunting on a lake beach right now and i get those REAL deep, but i can tell after the first couple of scoops what im dealing with... count your blessings they are shallow. You also get a simular problem at a toot lot where playground equipment are. In those cases you reduce your sensitivity real low and turn the coil sideways toward the equipment.

Chipmonkey is correct - when in doubt raise the coil off the ground/target area 10" - 12" and if you still hear the target is big/deep junk in most cases.

In fact the SEF, and any other coil of that size if used in that situation (buried cans), is acting normal.

So, is your idea to skip those buried cans? If so it's most likely a BAD idea and here's why...

I hunt an old (100 year old) base ball field once in a while. In the far right field, before and just beyond the fence, I was hitting smashed can after smashed can. It was hot and dry when I first started detecting the place and I couldn't dig them out so I was skipping them and ya detecting sukt.

But in the fall, after the rains came in, I went back. I re-found those buried cans and I spent a bit digging down the 12"-24" to get them out - ya a pain in the neck. While cleaning out the can wreck I dug out a 1930 WL half - right on, made my day! And after I was pretty confident that I'd cleaned the place up really started findings: 1942 WL half; 1926 Pontiac/GM "Chief of the Sixes" token; 2 silver Washington quarters; several silver dimes (Barber and Mercury); and a myriad of Indian and Wheat cents. All of which was where under or around all those smashed steel and aluminum cans and can ends.

So ya, buried cans and miscellaneous junk is a pain the neck but don't sweat 'em, get them out and they're out forever, and once out focus on the good stuff.

A chain link fence I can't hunt around, Within a foot and a half. Pinpointing around them is a big problem. I like the deepth of the coil and the coverage. I still want a really hot 5 inch coil, for the trashes areas, that is a must. I sure wish Minlab would hip mount a model of the SE or Etrace. But that not going to happen. So at least I know my coil is in good shape. Thank All Of you Guy's.

LOL, you shoulda grabbed my 5" Excelerator when you had the chance. (i decided to keep it for a while longer).

my 10x12 SEF is BY FAR the best-producing coil i own. i'm having trouble imagining what could be wrong with yours

I agree with you Sangamon about the value of the 10X12... great coil. On that chain link fence problem.... reduce your sensitivity to 5 or so and point the bottom toward the fence it works great on tot lots. Junky areas can produce big... most people just wont hunt them. It takes time and you cant rush it.... lots of pennies and high tone sounds or nulling. We tried to hunt an old drive-in yesterday.... trust me its a pain and you just cant do it with a large coil or very long.

I hated it...but ONLY because I was not used to it.

I remember plain as day how each time I put it on...I would end up going right back to the 1050 coil.
It reminded me of using a small coil because it signaled and chirped over everything...like a pinball machine....precise hits over each and every target.

It was not falsing...it simply was a HOT coil and I was not used to it.

The 1050 was a very smooth coil and it found stuff for me...so I would go right back to it.

I remember one day I just had to leave the 1050 coil at home and devote 100% faith in the 10 x 12 coil to give it a fair assessment. I have never looked back since that day...and am thankfull I gave the 10 x 12 my full attention so that I could properly test it.

What you are experiencing is the same with any coil...and some of the other fellers' have already responded with the same answer I would give you.

My point to all of this is that I can tell you from over 100 hours of experience with the 10 x 12 coil before most people even had a chance to use it......it's a superb coil...and I prefer it hands down over the pro coil. Once I got used to it...it handles iron better for me than the pro coil.

One of the reasons a lot of guys like their EX2's better than the SE is because they feel the EX2 does better for them in the iron. The 10 x 12 coil makes my SE much more reliable in the iron for me.

Give it some more time friend..and i think you'll be glad you did.
