SEF 10 x 12 or Minelab Pro Coil

After reading all I can find on both coils I still cannot make up my mind as to which one to buy for my SE. It looks like most everyone is happy with whichever one they bought. I plan to use it in parks, yards and occasionally a farm field. As Vinnie Barbarino (Welcome back Kotter) would say

The SEF is $169.95, 11" Pro coil is 198.97 Take your pick both are good.

I was told they are both equal. You may want to get the 12 x 15 SEF instead. That is the one I would get for the SE...it is the best for coin sized objects....I read the 15 x 18 SEF has a very slight depth decrease on coin sized due to the large size but still very good to get.

For reference here is some info from the UK (no 11" PRO coil here in these tests, only the stock SE coil).:

Depth Tests
The following depth tests were attained on disturbed medium
to high mineralised soil with the detectors adjusted to maximum
performance while remaining stable.

Explorer SE---------------------Cut quarter penny--5p decimal coin--Crotal bell
Standard slim-line coil---------5.5"---------------------8"-----------------------13"
12 x 10" S.E.F--------------------6"------------------------9"-----------------------15"
15 x 12" S.E.F--------------------5.5"---------------------9"------------------------15.5"
18 x 15" S.E.F--------------------4.5"---------------------8.5"----------------------17"

Hope this maybe helps towards making a decision!

From what I have heard and read about what others have said i would go with the SEF coils. The 15x12 would be killer for the SE

Two votes for the SEF 15 x 12. Does anyone know the weight of this coil and of the 10 x 12? I made a 15 x 12 pattern out of cardboard and it was huge. I

I received this in a PM
I have used the SEF 10x12 and the pro coil and the 10x12 I tried was not as deep or quiet as both my pro coils and did not separate as well either. The pro coil is lighter and better balanced as well. Just from my experience would not trade my pro coil for 2 SEF coils and have to hunt without another pro coil .The extra dollars for pro coil will be well spent.

I couldn't make up my mind either, so I bought both. Tried both in a heavily hit site just to compare. The ONLY difference I could see was the pro coil was lighter in weight. Otherwise, both coils hit good targets (deep silver, 8+ inches) and gave solid readings. I have no complaints about either one.

The slightly extra weight of the SEF can be dealt with by altering swing/scan techniques. I learned long ago how to avoid 'detector elbow'...which isn't fun at all....by scanning from the shoulder, with detecting arm extended straight, and shifting weight from right to left foot as you advance. You use that weight shift to help move the detector and you can go all day.

That's a good tip of shifting your weight and using it to swing the MD.

After reading other post here on Findmall and the replies to this post, I placed an order with Kellyco for the Pro coil. The lighter weight was the deciding factor. Sponsors Detector Depot and Kellyco offered the coil at the same price. Detector Depot also offered free shipping but the coil was on back-order. Hopefully the coil arrives before Friday when I leave on a week long Pheasant hunting / Metal detecting trip to Iowa. Thanks for the replies.

I have an E-Trac and an Explorer SE Pro, and I like the SEF 12x10 so much I have one for each of them and use it as my main hunting coil if that tells you anything. It hits hard on silver and its combination of id, separation and depth make it hard to beat. As good as the pro coil is, which is very good, I prefer the SEF as it's just outstanding which I saw both in testing and in the field.
