selling gold

say you had 100 grams of 14k scrap to sell, as I understand it 14k is around 60% pure gold plus a "filler" such as silver. So when you send your gold in to the refiners have any of them paid for the theoretical "filler metal"? which in this case would be about 40 grams or so. Or do they just skim this for a little extra?

As can be seen here: http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=2430

And 10K, not shown, is .417 or 41.7% gold.

Also 14K rings unless marked P for plumb can vary a bit.

As to his question about what they do with the "filler", thats a good question as some of it is precious metals. I have never thought to ask.

Items marked as 14K can be as low as 13 1/2K. Karat Plumb items are exactly the percentage as marked, so a 14KP ring would be exactly 14K.

14KP means it will test a minimum of 14K. But we're splittin hairs

It is depending upon the filler.
Some fillers burn away and others are salvagable. In the case of gold you have a filler of silver and most pay you for the silver content also. But not for nickle and copper.

I think Mike just sent some into Midwest refinery.

I have always been paid for both gold and silver.

Filler in yellow gold is copper and silver....the more yellow the gold the more copper that is in it....the filler in White Gold is Nickel. In yellow gold the amount of silver is very small.
