SHALLOW WATER WITH A 705

WONKA

New member
In the morning I am going to hunt with my 705 a very well known beach that I have hunted with my sand shark. The sand shark finds every bit of useless wire, bottle caps, pull tabs and can slaw up to 10 inches and is too much for this old man to dig. So, I plan on putting the water proof 7.5kHz coil on my 705 and try some discrimination in ankle deep salt water. Now I could spend half a day playing with he settings or ask you all where to start . So please feel free to enlighten me as up to now I haven't gone anywhere near the wet sand much less in the water because my favorite coil is not waterproof and even damp sand causes falsing unless I turn the sensitivity down way below where I am used to hunting with the stock dd coil. Looking forward to your advice.

My 70 does really bad in salt water. But about a foot away from the water it did great. I had to run the sensitivty at about 13 and run beach ground balance in the water and it still drove me crazy . Not one foot from the water and I could run the sensivity in the twenties.

The 6" DD and 9" 18.75 kHz coils would be better in the water, just don't get the control box wet.

I just returned from the beach, where I hunted during the Thanksgiving holidays. My son used the X-Terra-70 withe the 10.5" DD MF coil and I used the X-Terra 705 with the same coil. We hunted from the dry sand right down to the water line. We both ran the beach GB and our sensitivity at 30 in the dry sand and lowered it to 19 in the wet sand. Both units were completely stable and operated very smoothly. We found some clad...nothing to brag about. Did not experience the problems you described. TomB
