Sidewinder

Rusty called me Tue. to let me know the latest on my "Katrina" Sidewinder. Actually it is one of 2 (2nd hand) that I got several years ago for my Grandkids. 5 ' of water came through their house (500yds.) off the Gulf Coast Beach. One was on the shelf in a closet and one was on the floor in the corner of the same closet when the "Surge"washed most everything in their house out the back door and into oblivion. It was 2 weeks before My daughter brought me the Sidewinder. It already had that white fuzzy stuff growing inside it. I naturally had no hope for it but gave a go at cleaning it by doing another couple of complete submersions (soaking) of clorox/water,then and Baking soda/water with a good dryout period between soaks Long story /short, after it dried out in the hot sun, for 3 days, I fired it up and it worked fine up until about 6 mo. ago when it started to act up a bit.Rusty just wanted to let me know it was working fine now and on it's way back home. No charge ,as always, and Rusty also sent a free piecy part needed for a headphone repair I will do myself. Tesoro service folks are just the best, and always have been from their beginning. I have been detecting since 69, and had some really undeserved,un-necessary, and sad experiences with my first detector folks and their so called service. I been there and done it on the service route and believe me, Tesoro smoked all their butts from the get go,. and still does. As an old buddy of mine used to say,,"Tellum Charlie sent you!!" +1 on that report, although I have'nt had to send my Tesoros in for repair that much because they are so well built and reliable. I bought a second hand Bandido a while back and it had a disc.pot that was going bad, they fixed it without question, superior service in my book! I also believe that Tesoro gets a lot of un-necessary repair returns (from what I read on the forums) with newbies and manually ground balanced Tesoros. This also pertains to other brands also. I have tried to explain to several guys on the forum how to ground balance a detector, some people just can't get it, Some people have to be shown, because trying to explain in written text what the threshold should sound like when lowering the coil to the ground is'nt doing it for them. They think it is the detector's fault,go figure. Ground Balancing a detector ain't rocket science, folks, get with a mentor and see for yourselfs. OK I''ll step off my soapbox now.

The simplest explanation I've heard as to how to manually ground balance is really pretty easy. Think of the GB knob as the volume knob of a radio. If the sound gets louder as the coil approaches the ground, turn the volume back. If it nulls out and gets louder as the coil is raised, turn the volume up. If, for some reason, you want the GB to be a bit positive or negative, adjust accordingly. It's always worked quick and easy for me.

What would those reasons be?

Which way is best for keeping false signal to a minimum?

Which way is best for better depth?

Thanks for explaining GB and keeping it simple.
