Silver 3-cent (trime) meter reading?

BlackX

New member
Anyone know what the meter reading is on a silver 3-cent piece?

Given the content (75% silver and 25%copper), I'd think it would read pretty high but given the weight--0.8 gms versus 2.5 gms for a Merc--I wondered if they read lower.

(My kids gave me a nickel 3-cent piece for xmas and I was amazed at how low it reads--around 99 (but it bounces around a bit).)

Thanks,
_Rich_

Ive dug a number of silver 5 cent pieces before they are smaller than a penny and quite thin(we called them fishscales),they all read 180 on my meter.I wonder why?

Rich according to the Sunray meter chart(the ranges that are posted on that meters face) the 3c piece should fall in between 95 and 105 so 99 sounds about right. Ive never found one or seen one in person but they must be pretty small coins. Any chance you can post a pic of it next to say a penny or a dime?

Thanks much,
Neil

Does anybody know from 1st hand experience, what tone id you will get with that reading? I would expect A Very LOW TONE!! But, that is a guess based on the Low Meter Reading & Common Sense!! Curious MINDS want to know!! NamVetLesTreasureSeeker

Les........
Those readings should give you a slightly lower tone than the default startup tone at 124 (or the all metal tone which is the same). Should sound like small brass/lead/foil.

Have not found one yet myself, but would look in the lower trash in the right locations.

You are asking on the silver 3 cent piece and I think most are thinking the Nickel 3 cent piece as I would think the silver one will read close to what a silver dime would read on the meter and have the high tones too. I don't have one of the silver ones or I would check it out.

I was wondering the same thing, Rick.

Neil, I set up to take a pic yesterday (of the nickel 3-cent I have--I don't have a silver one) but couldn't get my camera to focus right (been having that issue lately). Then my computer at home crashed and burned badly so I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to finish that. But, if helpful, I like to use coinfacts.com for metal content, weight, diameter, pictures, etc. of U.S. coins. You could probably borrow an image from there of what you wanted to compare and scale them accordingly in Photoshop or some such and paste them next to each other.

Thanks Rich, thats an idea.

For what Rick mentioned, I remember vaguely in one of Andy Sabishes books on the Sov that he said I believe the silver 3 cent pieces read like a pulltab but have a smoother sound, something like that. Hey Ive found merc dimes real thin that read where zinc pennies are.
