Silver lining to a lousy detecting year.

This detecting season has been my worst since I began this hobby over 20 years ago. Combination of high gas prices, home remodeling, lousy weather and hunted out parks have really limited my finds this year. In a normal year, I would have dug a total of over 100 silver, Indian head cents and other old coins by now. As of today, my total was four silvers, 18 Indian head cents, a Two cent piece and about 9 V & Buffalo nickels. I started detecting a spot I've been over many times and after about 15 minutes, I get a real high tone about half way down the depth meter. It had that almost too good to be true sound that usually ends up being a big can lid or crushed soda can. But this one was different. Even before digging I was thinking silver half. Wasn't disappointed when I saw the large silver edge in the hole. Reached in and pulled out the1903 Barber half. Only the second Barber half I've dug and the first one was secreted away in a sterling silver compact. Was actually hoping for a Franklin since I already had a Barber, Walker and silver Kennedy but I'm not complaining ! Helped to brighten up an otherwise dreary season.

Both barber halves that I have found were found with OTHER machines after I had been over the area time and time again with my Explorer. You would think a coin that large would be the first one found with the Explorer. I don't have an explanation other than I started shying away from Auto Sensitivity since both were only about 5 inches deep. I have found that in manual sensitivity shallow objects are more likely to be "seen" by the Explorer. Congrats on the nice coin!
