We went to one of our favorite spots Monday - an old sports oval. We seem to find old stuff every time, no matter how many times we go back. Monday was no exception. The oldest coin was a King George III halfpenny that is very worn and has a hole. I can identify the type, but the date will forever remain a mystery. That's the second one of those I've found in that field. The first was dated 1807. This one would be around that date also. Also dug an 1857 Queen Victoria Halfpenny, and a couple of "newer" coppers that, for some reason, didn't make it into the pic (1933 & 1948 Halfpennys and a 1951 penny). The ground there has not been good to the old copper. As for silver, this was one of my better days! A 1918 threepence, 1896 Queen Vic sixpence, 1925 & 1936 sixpences, and 2 Florins (1941 & 1944)! For the Americans info - all silver coinage here from 1945 and earlier was 92.5% silver (sterling silver).
Also found some trinkets - a kids ring that says "Walter Lantz" on the back with what I'm assuming is one of his cartoon characters; a "Happy 21st..." charm which has "Bullion Mark - 999" on the bottom. I think this means it's pretty much pure silver. Cool! The shark thing rang up like a twenty cent coin (08-13).
The ground was moist and made for easy digging. I think that helped magnify the signals a bit also. Oh, and we came home with $10.30 in spending money, too!
It was a nice day.
Cheers,
Toby
