Silver Two for One today 09.19.09

Took the SE out to yet another spot I'd hunted previously with my other detector. I'm really enjoying retracing my steps and seeing what I missed (not that I enjoy missing anything, but man this SE pulls out the signals!). Feeling pretty comfortable with the settings and controls now, and am adjusting to match the site.

Anyway, got a nice high tone, but with some chop. Was repeatable all the way around, so knew it was good. After clearing the dirt, I could see the silver rim sticking straight up at the bottom of the hole. Not sure if it was laying on edge, or tipped up, but might explain the chop if so.

Now, at this point I'm looking at the edge of silver and already knowing that this was an old site. I previously had found an 1881 Indian Head here, and not much else. So I was feeling pretty good looking at silver on this site. Despite higher hopes though, I had to settle for a Roosie. Still, it was silver. But then I scanned the hole again and still got a tone. I thought maybe a cent, but it turned out to be another Roosie! I'll take it! Nearby I did find a deeper cent, but was a '63 Memorial cent. Oh well.

Then after running an errand I cam across a street project. With dirt piles. I like dirt piles. Still had the detector, but not much time. So I did a quick scan along one section, and then found a pile with grass clods and what looked like deeper dirt. Got a good signal and fished out the skeleton key. Neat. Got another signal, and chased down the Indian Head. Bonus!

But now I gotta wait until I can get back...

Nice coins! That indian cent sure looks good. They're usually pretty corroded when I find them here.

Yeah, that last picture was taken with the flash on, and it kinda washed out the surface details. The one with the dimes doesn't have the flash, and some of the surface crud is easier to see.

Here in MN, it's real hit and miss on how the cents turn out. If the soil is black topsoil stuff, maybe a bit sandy, they come out great. But if they've been hit with fertilizer or road salts, then they get corroded. This one fell into the former group luckily.

But - I've also been using a new technique to clean the cents - Magic Eraser! It's melamine foam actually, but they cut it up into these sponges and market it as that brand name. Just wet them, and they wipe off the deep dirt and surface gunk. Takes a bit of elbow grease, but doesn't seem to leave the scratches that anything else does. I've stopped using the heated peroxide method, as peroxide seems to darken the coins, where this just leaves the nice patina. But the melamine foam only works on dirt based crud; if there's harder stuff on it, more like corrosion, then it'll just chew up the sponge.

I have some before/after pics of other cents I've done this year I can show separately if interested.

Congrats on the nice finds. That 63 Rosie sure looks like it was dropped shortly after it's release. The Injun is the same way. WTG with them finds and hope you find many more. Good Luck and HH to you.
