Silver umax

Any other umax owners here? I've got limited experience with mine, but I love it. Light, easy to use, and outperforms machines that cost twice as much. Any tips for using this machine? One I've heard is to thumb the disc knob to get an idea of what the target is.

Get out and use it and experiment with it and see what works for you. The silver was my first detector. It is easy to use, self explanatory really. You mentioned thumbing the disc...yes thats what ya do...locate a target and thumb the disc up or down to get somewhat of a better idea of whats in the ground before you dig.

Once you have pintpointed the target by "X' ing it and dig your plug...you would do well to have a handheld pinpointer to help finish finding the target. There are many out there, anywhere from $17 to $350, choose which ever you can afford and it will help locate targets and prevent a lot of frustration.

Enjoy your new hobby!

Biggest tip is to go out and use it, set the disc just above iron and dig everything so you will get used to and understand the signals and what may be under the coil.
Best place to practice is a sandy beach, easy to dig and scoop and there will be plenty of different targets around. Good first time practice. After digging countless junk targets
and good targets, you'll get the hang of it.

Get a pair of Killer B Wasp headphones. Put the dics on foil. Then get a pull tab and a nickel. Both should give you a double beep if not turn the disc knob just passed the word foil and leave it there. When you go out and hunt and here the double beep listen carefully on beep should be a lower tone then the other. The lower tone will be the nickel but until you get a lot of practice dig the double beep and try to figure it out what one it is before you dig. Soon you will be able to tell which on it is and be able to skip many many pull tabs and still get the GOLD!!!!! Enjoy the Silver it is a great detector.

I disagree a little bit. To start out set the disc. just shy of penny. This way you are eliminating most trash and learning what a good signal sounds like. Remember a good signal usually is clean from two directions. Once you get a little success at finding coins, then turn the disc down some, say to just shy of nickel. At this point you have now included lots of trash. Learn that trash most often does not give a clean signal from two directions. Check your target from two directions and dig a fair amount so you learn to associate the sound to the target. When you get good at this setting and are finding some nickels then turn the disc. down to foil and learn some more.

Remember at the higher disc settting I recommend starting out at you can kiss most rings goodbye. But that is okay because your main objective is to learn what a good tone sounds like from two directions and dig some coins. With the disc setting shy of penny you will hear lots of pops and clicks in the audio if you are in a trashy area. This is normal and is just items being partially discriminated out. When you hear this slow the swing speed down and overlap your passes. Listen for a nice clean tone among all the noise and zero in on the target. It is easy to finds coins in the trashy areas if you slow down and overlap your passes.

I usually cherry pick for silver and the clad that comes with it by setting disc. just shy of penny. Set like this the Silver is a coin slayer.

Some days I get adventerous if in the right area and turn the disc down to foil and hunt with hopes of finding rings. Tabman and Deliveryboy are masters at this. You will dig lots of trash, but you find nickels and rings. I found five rings with the Silver this summer, all junkers, but all found with no problem.

In my mild soil the Silver will get 7" fairly easy and I am guessing with wet ground in the right area, maybe on a good day she could hit at 8". I found 12 quarter in one day all in the 6-7" range and those at 7" were weaker signals, but repeatable from two directions. Now this depth was with the disc set just shy of penny and at this disc setting you do lose some depth. My buddies detector cost about $400 more and might have an 1" on depth over me in my soil. So all in all the Silver is a great buy for the money and very effective.

I have read that the Silver with the 10 x 12 on it and ground balance trimmer pot adjusted, is the deepest Tesoro made. I am a little skeptical, but thinking about giving it a try.

You got yourself a great detector! No doubt.

Sorry to disagree with some of ya.

I have to agree with Rainyday, set the disc just above where a zinc penny is knocked out (I used a sharpie and made a mark for my Cibola) and get some experience without digging to much trash. You will probably get some pull tabs and of course weird shaped pieces of can slaw, large chunks of foil and coke cans are still going to give you a good signal, but you should be finding more good targets that bad so that your not to discouraged by finding lots of trash and fewer good finds.
