Finally made it out of the house today to detect some after it warmed up a bit. Just as I had my truck loaded up with my gear, my wife holler from the front porch Sweetheart can you come here and do this before you leave out. That do this BS took me two hours or right at it. Isn't it amazing how women folk can time things. Had I just been five minutes faster at loading up I could had made it out of the place without a hitch.

Well I did make it out and went to detect this little homestead place I have had my eyeball on for sometime. It's not a big place and sits adjoining a relatively new house. I believe I may have had mentioned this place before on the BH forum, though I had never detected it till today. I called the guy that owns it last night and told him I wanted to come out to detect since he had given me prior permission to do so though it's been over a year ago. He said come on and I thanked him and told him I would be around as soon as the weather warmed up sometime today. I got there about 2pm so I didn't have much time considering I wanted to get back in time to take care of some other stuff that I needed to if I were going to plan on detecting tomorrow after work on the way home.

Th owner had the place nice and clean excepting for a few bushes towards the back of the place that I wish he would remove also. The reason is because they are growing right in front of what use to be the back porch which in my opinion is a prime location for some good finds considering it faces the East so you know they probably sat there more than they did the front whereas they could keep out of the heat and sun. There too is a large old Oak tree that hangs over the back porch so you know it is THE place. The ground was hard clay mixed with some loam here and there, though for the most part it was clay down to at least 10in.

I was into my hunt about an hour and a half before I got my fist good hit that had any depth to it. I did find a little clad there though I figured it had to have dropped out of the owners pockets while he was cutting grass or something. If I were going to find anything worth a hoot it was going to be deep. I figured this too based on how much traffic the place sees from tractors and mowers. The hit was a good repeatable and it was solid in both AM and Disc. I was hunting in disc with my sensitivity at 85 and disc at 55. Also had it in the F1 Mode since I wanted to key into the silver stuff at the best frequency the T2 has for this type of hunting. When I'm looking for Gold I will run the frequency up as far as it will go so long as it is quite. I know some will say it doesn't make a dang bit of difference but to me I'll use everything the T2 has to offer. I was using the 4 audio whereas I could pull out the zinc stuff better. When I dug down to my target depth after sweeping it maybe three or four times and switching over from Disc to AM and back again to validate all the readings I saw what looked to me like a small pendant. I knew it was smaller than a dime and lots smaller than a barber dime for sure. But when I picked it out of the hole and squirted it down with some water and wiped it clean as best I could, it was then that I saw I had a Half Dime. Man.....I could have gave it up right there and then had I not just got there. I placed the half dime in my pocket for fear that it may drop out of my find pouch especially being so small and all. I went on about my swinging for another hour or so picking up a piece of clad here and there. This was not the most loaded place I have detected I can tell you that straight up. I was getting bored but each time I did I took the little bugger out of my pocket and told myself there has to be more. As I turned the corner of the place I had a hit next to a tree that stood there. It wasn't as big as the oak in the back of the place though it has been there awhile. You could see some of it's roots rising above the ground and snaking out a good 10-15ft from the tree. It was between two of these roots that I had the hit. I swept it several times and angled my coil to get a good shot below the root since the hit was right up against the root itself. I switched over to AM and shot it again and yep the depth was at about 8in. I started my dig real slow since I knew this one I could easily damage if not careful since there was really know way to dig a plug. Basically I had to cut through some smaller roots to get to it. I stuck my pin-pointer in the hole I had cut down to about 6in and I didn't even get a beep. I started to scrap the inside of the hole real slow since I knew I was real close. I stuck the pin-pointer in again and it let out that "here I am beep". I brushed the dirt aside and saw the shiny edge of something. It was standing straight up on edge and wasn't no wonder I had a time picking it up till I ran my coil lengthwise down the edge of the root. When going across the root I would get a small beep but it broke up too much and wasn't repeatable. But when I ran the length of the root there she was. Well the find was a "V" Nickel and it sure was a nice one. Wore down as hell but you could still make out the date. as a 1898. At first I though it was 1893 though after cleaning it found it to be a 1898. Still a keeper in my book. I put this one in my pocket with the half dime and kept at it for about another 45min till I decide to leave and try again another day. I wanted to get home and soak the finds and take care of those little chores I knew I left behind whereas I can do my thing tomorrow after work. So long as all my stuff is taken care of my wife has no gripes about me detecting. I got home placed the coins in a cup of liquid detergent and let them soak till I was done outside. I came back in took them out and scrubbed them down with some toothpaste. It was then that I noticed a little hole in the half dime. Man...what a bummer. But thats ok since the date is visible and it still is my oldest find this year. In my book it is still a keeper. I don't know how much of it's value it may have lost but I don't' care since I will pass it on to one of my grandchildren anyway. Check out the pics below. BTW I had found a whopping .31 in clad! Sorry the pics didn't come out that clear. I kept moving the light around to get them as best I could and what you see is the best that I could get it.

Congrats on the half dime!!! I haven't found on since Jan. 1, 2004 not that I am counting... ;) Seriously, the only reason I remember that is I thought, 'What a way to start the year!' I love any old silver I can find but bust and seated hold a special place in my heart...

Know what you mean Bill, the seated is the first one I have found in almost three years. Wish it hadn't of had the hole but then again, it just goes to show that this coin had a little more personal history behind it.

I am lucky enough to live in PA. So, the half-dime on Jan. 1, 2004 wasn't my last seated coin. May many more seated be in your future... :)
