Silver's rate of tarnishing in salt water

Anyone have a feel for how long it takes sterling silver to develop that blackened tarnish in a saltwater beach environment. Also interested in wet sand vs dry sand rate if you have any ideas there.

Really varied. Too many factors .(porosity, pureness etc)

Similar- certain silver rings (I used to wear) would turn black inside & out when I would sweat. Even stain my finger. Others would be unchanged for weeks.

You'll note similar effects from silver from beaches, soil, fresh saltwater.

About an hour in the hot tub here at the beach will turn my silver ring. Takes alot of rubbing to shine it back.

Very interesting, guys. Thanks for posting.

I ask because my last trip to the beach I found a blackened ring in the dry and several untarnished (tho 2 had settings missing) earrings in the wet. Would have thought that the blackened one was dropped long ago based on the wet earrings' condition. Then compound that with when I find silver coins or rings in my acidic east TN soil, they are always pristine/untarnished. I guess I should have paid more attention in chem class.
