Skidplates anyone?

Coils are easily enough damaged and expensive enough that I always use one.

Some detectors actually work best if you scrub the ground with the coil, so peticularly with those a coil cover can be worn out in a year. A $10 investment can effectively save you $100+.

Always coil cover!!
Had a Garrett EuroAce and after 3 months use without
coil cover it was worn due to all direct hit with stones and hard surface.
After that I always use cover.

A standard coil is over $ 200 in Sweden.

I NEVER use coil covers. Coil covers cause more problems then they do good and do you really think that your going to wear the bottom of a coil out???

Longhair: Where are you getting a skidplate for the standard 9-inch concentric 7.5 khz coil for $10???
I just threw out $10 as a generic price. The 9" Xterra covers can be had for under $20 shipped to your door.
Your stock 9" should have one on from the factory. They all do when new.

And YES Mark, I could wear out the bottom of a coil, or otherwise damage it in some fashion that a cover would have prevented. What sort of trouble can they cause (as you mentioned) that normal care & maintenence wouldn't handle?

I have been using the Xterra for about 7 years now and I MD 5 to 7 days a week when the ground is not froze and in the spring an fall I am in farm fields fields to where my coil is rubbing on a lot of dirt an along with all the grass hunting I do and I do not see any wear on the bottom of my coil. also since I do not use a coil cover I do not have to do the maintenence of poping off the coil cover "which is not easy" to clean out the dirt that gets in there all the time. if the dirt in there is mineralized it can throw off the signals that you are getting.

I quit using coil covers years ago. Just 4-5 thin coats of that bed liner stuff you can get at an auto parts store and you are set.

Bill in Oregon,
Yes, I have worn out the bottom of a coil when not using a cover. I do tend to get real close to the ground and bump obstacles, especially at construction sites. But , my son works for a plastic fabricating company and they do "plastic welding". So, I had them weld the bottom of my coil and then I put a coil cover on it to prevent any further damage. That was on one of the DD 6 inch coils. when I first bought it, it looked like it had a cover on it, but it's not. The way it is built, the bottom overlaps the top and just looks like a cover. That's what I get for getting in too big of a hurry to try out my new coil and not looking at it close enough!

Bill,
Not really, I tend to hunt construction sites more than homes with lawns. Anytime I can find a house being remodeled better yet torn down or an old building in a "downtown" or old area of town, I jump on it. But, I always ask permission first!!!!!!!!!!! I try to find the owner or at least the contractor for permission. Sometimes you have to wear a hard hat and/or a reflective vest to gain access to the site. There are certain companies that will not let you on their sites but, others will as long as you stay out of their way. I use the same rules as hunting someones yard, FILL YOUR HOLES & HAUL OUT YOUR TRASH!!!!!!!!!!!! If they ask you to stay off the site until they leave for the day, respect their wishes. When you are wearing headphones it's dangerous to be around heavy equipment.

I do a lot of homestead and field hunting. I use a cover and I also take it off and clean it out when it chatters like the sensitivity is too high and that always takes care of the problem. I think its due to different sites with different mineralization.

How about lose of dept with one on

No noticeable loss of depth.

Since they are super-thin, you won't notice any loss of depth. The concern with skidplates is when they get filled with mineralized particles of soil, which can cause erratic behavior. Every so often, depending on where I've been detecting, I'll take them off, rinse off the coil and clean up the cover. Takes only a few minutes. On the otherhand, over the years, I've cut a few skidplates on some broken glass that would have put a nasty gash in the bottom of the coil, had I not had the skidplate. It is much cheaper to replace a $15 skidplate than a $150 coil. And as I said, it only takes a few minutes to maintain them. JMHO HH Randy

Place a bead of silicone sealer around all edges of the coil cover. Problem solved. If you ever need to remove it just cut the silicone with a sharp knife and redo it. This is what I have done.

Yes this type of thing is also what I have done but I used Lexan caulking. If I had to do it all over again I would purposely use a cheap lower quality grade of Silicone or Latex caulking. Why? because lower grade caullking does not stick as good and can be peeled off easier when the time comes to remove the coil cover. Hope this helps.
