Small coil and digger???????

outdoorsman

New member
I have been reading/researching about the coils and digging tools.A lot of different answers.Seems the leasche?(blue handle?) is the winner.Christmas list items ya know. What do you want, what do you want.I might just tell her to call doc and listen to him,but would really appreciate some input here.I have the stock coil and the 15" WOT.Been doing OK with them, but a smaller coil would maybe complete the arsenal. Thanks scott.

Hi Outdoorsman, small coils will not only give you an advantage on separation on high and moderate trash areas, but they will give you the ability to pinpoint perfectly, they will also fit tight spaces your bigger coils couldn't go before and the sensitivity for small/thin items increases, you can also work closer to metal structures. Your best bets are either the 5" EXcelerator coil which I own, it's VERY sensitive (which is a big plus) and it goes DEEP and I mean DEEP (I've gotten dimes at 12 inches with a loud solid signal), and pinpointing is a snap. Your other option is the Sunray Stealth X-5 5-inch coil which is better quality than the EXcelerator from Kellyco, although I THINK the performance is the same as the EXcelerator if not better (Sunray has a great reputation for making high quality items). The EXcelerator is this one (it's a picture of my actual coil):

You can also get the Sunray Stealth X-8 or the Minelab 8" FBS coil. Here's the Sunray:

All Sunray coils have a 1-Year warranty and coil cover, the EXcelerators don't come with a cover, they do have a 1-year warranty though.

As for the diggers go Lesche all the way and never look back! The digging tools I recommend are the Model 85B OR 85E (Both 85 models are exactly the same, except for the color of the hand grips, I'd go for the 85E, the bright orange-colored would be easier to find if lost, specially at night):

Another tool from Lesche to take into consideration would be the 'Raptor', it comes with the leather or corduroy sheath:

I also use Jimmy Sierras's 'Treasure Scoop' which is made of ABS High Impact plastic (it wears just like iron, so it will LAST), it won't scratch coins unless you are actually trying to scratch the coins on purpose, and even if you're trying it will take some effort. And also since it's plastic your detector won't go off, so you can wave it full of soil to see if the item is in there, here's the treasure scoop (I recommend the Green or Yellow, the black will make it a tad difficult to see your target):

***Take note that the Lesche Model 85 can get only very little amounts of soil so I recommend the treasure scoop or other trowel that will scoop soil as much as you want, I'd go for the treasure scoop if I were you.

Another accessory I highly recommend and which I personally use is the Sunray X-1 Probe for the Minelab Explorer, it's a 1" thick, 9" long pinpointer that attaches to your detector and has a coil/pinpointer switch, well, check it out for yourself @ http://www.sunraydetector.com/ it sells for $179.95+S&H and it's worth its weight in Platinum! I use it 100% of the time, it cuts time of recovery like you couldn't imagine, get one before a smaller coil, you WON'T regret it!

Thanks for an excellent reply,I saw there were more than a few that read and no replies,I really do appreciate the time you took to answer my question, more than well done.Looking seriously at the raptor and the sunray because of your post, thanks again for your time, scott.

I agree 110% with ACE about the X-1. I can't imagine detecting without a inline probe. I kept the one off my MXT so I could sell it and buy one for my EXII. So if you know somebody with DFX/MXT I need to sell it so I can order the X-1 for MY new EX-II which I will have TOMORROW!!!!! Oh. Lesche tools all the way!!!! None better. Great deterrent for the Two legged park rats looking for their next fix. They'll think twice with that in your hand.

think twice with that in your hand?Actually what I do sometimes, is to carry my 380 cal sig in the large pocket of my finds pouch, good stuff goes in the small pocket on the outside in smaller pouch. If someone is silly enough to demand my loot(or give me trouble) well,I can reach into the larger section of the pouch and give them all they really "don't" want.I do have the X-1 probe, could not detect without it,it is an awsome tool, especially when I am useing the 15" WOT.thankds again for the feedback, scott.

Only had one close encounter it was in a well used nice local park where a bunch of drug addicts and delinquents sometimes hang out. I was detecting 50-60yds away from my wife down hill close to a river path. I looked up and saw this guy with chains and spikes and red spiked hair walking towards her. He was saying something to her and I saw her pull the lesche out and knell down on one knee in a defensive position like she going to dig something. ( We all use screwdriver probes to dig in the parks) He stopped and looked around and saw me heading straight towards him with my headphones off and lesche in my hand. He knew we were all business. He must of decided it wasn't important because he quickly walked away. We hunt closer together after that. I am not sure he had malicious intentions. Better safe than sorry, my wife did a good job of putting herself into a safe position. She told me afterwards that she didn't even see me coming, but she wanted to be ready to gut him like a fish.
She acted like she couldn't hear him, but she told me he was asking her if she had change for a $10. Suspicious
Always keep your wits About you.
Happy and Safe Hunting

I like the way your wife thinks  Be careful though asking for change or 'some money' (like someone asking/begging for $1 or $0.25) is one of the oldest tricks in the book, when they see you actually have some cash they'll try to rob you. I usually carry a handgun because sometimes the other knife (cold steel) I carry or the Lesche won't just do, this is the exact one, less the touch-laser, it's in .50AE so if it doesn't stop them with pain it will kill them, as the saying goes 'shoot 'em all, let God sort them out', look and drool at this handcannon:

I have the Red handled one too, it's the old one I think, before Lesche started Predator Tools, or I think it's made specially for Whites (it should say Lesche/Whites in the oval handguard), same quality and durability minus the warranty, although in order to break it you must be superman or have his strength. So don't worry about it.

Hey Scott,

I have both the Lesche digger (mine has a black handle) and the Raptor. Funny thing is I just use the digger. The Raptor is a little big and while it's a great tool, my preference is the digger. Both are really well made.

I'm looking into a new coil too and I'm tossed between getting a 5" or the Platypus. Everything I read points to the Platypus as being better suited to the type of hunting I do. Good target separation but with the same if not better depth than the stock. We'll see. Maybe it'll be the Platypus for Christmas and the 5" for my birthday next year :)

coils, coils, coils. i'd say go with the 8 incher. ive had my explorer xs since it first came. ill buy my new explorer when the explorer 3 comes out. awsome machine. anyway ive got every coil that goes with the explorer but i use the 8 most of the time. the 5 incher is great for trashy areas. the stock 10 is great for good open areas. my 12 is great on the beach and open areas its so much lighter than my wot coil.the joey is a nice coil but it just collects dust. a must have is the x-1 probe. i use the wot on my sovereign when im down at the beach because its just a killer beach machine in all metal mode.
hope this helps. oh yea , they're all sunrays, except the joey and the wots. hope this helps.
