Bought a used Quattro from this/Treasure Depot forum. Have had it in use a little over a week and have gone over areas I detected with my ACE 250 std coil. Results were such that it was almost like I had never been there before, found lots more clad and some jewelry. The Quattro learning curve for me isn't too bad since the tones are similar to my Excal.Learning more every time out. Some areas are trashy. Just ordered an 8" minelab coil. Have a Sniper coil for the ACE. Does anyone have any firm opinions on the necesssity for a X-5 or Joey coil for the really trashy areas, or would I be OK with the 8" Quattro and ACE Sniper combo. Does the seeemingly superior performance of the Quattro and standard coil carry over to the small coils to a significant degree over the ACE? Thanks.
 
Hi John, I use the SunRay X5 coil on my Explorer SE and in my opinion is a great addition to your detector aresonal. I know it would do the same for the Quattro. So I highly recommend the X5 for trashy sites. Happy hunting John and God Bless.

I ordered an excallibur 5" from Kellyco, and I love it for trashy areas. It seems to go "reasonably" deep, and separates trash like you can't believe. I bet that 8" you ordered will be a good comprimise between the 5 and 10 inch. Heard good things about that from other people on this forum. If you have trash the 5" will separate it very well. Thanks. The 8" is working well. I decided to keep my ACE 250 with the sniper coil and have gone over areas that were really trashy and picked out targets that I couldn't separate with the 8". Will stay with this setup for now, as the land sites I have been going to are modern, no deep old stuff. Will keep an eye on the 4X7 Excelerator coil. There seems to be some bias against Kellyco from time to time, although as you have read, significant support for the coil.
 
Yea, John, good to know the 8 inch is working good for you, and nice that you could keep the Ace with the sniper setup. That's especially nice, because when I want to use my Excalibur 5", I have to change it over and it's kind of a hassle, although I ordered another lower shaft, for it, so all I need to do is unhook it and put the shaft with the small coil back on the detector, so I'm just being picky, picky, picky, and lazy.:geek:I know some of the gang here are using WOT coils and maybe some others. I've heard really good things about the WOT, at least on the bigger coils like 15inch ones, but sounds like you've got a really good setup. Keep sharing stuff, I enjoy hearing what's going on on all this stuff. Marc.
 
You are right. Even with the lower shaft/ coil setup it is a pain because having to pull the cable through the upper shaft is no fun. In the field even less so. The ACE and sniper coil together is only around 250-270 dollars, depending on the seller. At most only a 100 dollars or less more than just a coil and lower rod for the Quattro. So you get a nice detector and an easy way to re-detect a hard area. I am sure it isn't as deep as one of the expensive small coils, but unless one is hunting in an area where there may be deep old stuff, so what.
 
You know what, JohnA, that makes a lot of sense to me. Not only do you not have to change the darn coil's every time, but you have an extra detector to boot. One more nice little adjunct, and I'll say this "carefully", but let's face it, it could happen, "IF", your in a "questionable" area as far as safety from the "big guys", like the park rangers, or bureau of land management, or any place that you may not honestly or dishonestly be sure of, I don't know about you, (and by the way, I'm not advocating dishonesty, I'm only giving a theory here), if you were to be caught, or your detector impounded, I don't know about you, but I'd rather lose $250. worth of detector instead of $845. worth. I live right next to the Mexican border here in San Diego. I'm dying to go down there and detect, but I'm not sure about their laws, and if I know Mexico, it may depend on how much money you have to pay off the Federales if they want to screw with you. I love Mexico, but that's just how it is SOMETIMES. I know I'm stepping out on a limb here, but this is a real issue, some of us may deal with from time to time.
 
At this point, no pushing the boundaries for me. Having a good time and finding lots of good stuff without getting stressed out over having to look over my shoulder.
 
JohnA, I think your so right about that. I only pushed it once, like we're talking about in an old mining town way off the beaten track in Nevada, and it made me so damn nervous, it wasn't even worth it so I left the place after searching for 20 minutes or so. I even get nervous here in town at a vacant lot or something sometimes. It just ruins all the fun when you have to worry like that. Marc.
