Small Spear Point (Archaic Age)

Da Yooper

New member
Found this the other day while hunting one of my favorite spots. It is a small socket spear point from the Archaic Age. I had an archaeologist look at it and he dated it to be 3000 -- 6000 years old. When I hold it in my hand I try to imagine what kind of man made this ,maybe a great hunter? or maybe a fierce warrior ? one can only wonder. One thing is for sure the last person to hold this point in his hand before me was the maker 3000---6000 years ago. It is made from copper and is 2.25. inches long. This is truly my best find ever

and some of us never even find our first one.

What type of area were you hunting in? It would be great to know what caused you to detect in that particular area, because I'm sure there are many other areas here in the U.S. that might produce similar artifacts. What type of research would you recommend to seek out a possible similar site. Montana has a lot of neat places and historical places.

Thanks all, If you all do some reading on Indian Copper Culture you"ll see the area that I hunt in.:beers:

Congratulations on a fantastic find! May I make an observation concerning this relic? With the rounded top, it appears to be a tent stake from the 40's or 50's? I'm just an old boy scout and have done a lot of camping in my younger years, in the 50's, and that's what it looks like to me. Let it be known that I have been wrong before and likely will be wrong again but I have a 'gut feeling' on this one.

No it is not a tent stake, it is 2.25 inches long x 3/8 of an inch wide. Please google Indian Copper Culture and do a little reading. There is some pictures to look at, note the conical points and then look at mine.

Certainly I agree with you, especially considering the length of the item, but the rounded top appears to be considerably more modern. You'll notice I said appears, as it's remains a wonderful find. The majority of the early tent stakes were in the 3" - 4" range and, in that light, your item wouldn't likely be such. In early tent stakes, the rounded top was bent over to hold the 'string', which was attached to the top-center of the pup tent. That's why the rounded top appears, to me, to be a tent stake. I must admit I've had a problem with archaeologist and carbon dating, as much of the 'claimed age of an item' doesn't come from a biblical viewpoint of the earth only being approximately twenty-five thousand years old (or less). Thank you for taking the time to respond and, again, congratulations on a wonderful find.

I can see where SS is coming from. I had "similar" tent stakes but they were steel or aluminum, the Al ones are not very good.

The copper piece I had that looked like that was for splicing rope!

Just kidding

Very Cool
