Some Goldquest nugget hunting updates and coil size reccomendations

Well have quite a bit of time in the AZ nugget fields with all 4 Goldquest coils. 2 are mono's from Eric and 2 are DD's from Reg.
On the monos from Eric....to my surprise...the 11" is best. The 8" is not any more sensitive to smaller gold but it is more sensitive to ground and being bumped against rocks. In order to hunt with the 8" without it falsing when bumped against a rock the delay has to be above 13usecs...almost at 15usecs. This negates any possible gain in smaller nuggets with the delay increase.
The only advantage is getting into smaller spaces but then it also does not have the depth then of the 11".
So for the moment I do not see much applications for the 8" in most nugget hunting applications here in AZ.
The 11" coil is great and that will be my mono choice.
As far as the DD's I have used two from Reg. Here the same pattern applies. The larger 11" dd was more stable and just as sensitive to small gold as was the smaller eliptical DD.
The smaller eliptical DD has the same issues as the 8" mono..it falses when bumped on rocks. Although it is no where near as bad....and is far more stable than the 8" mono.
Now there is nothing wrong with the two smaller coils in the sense that they do not false when bumped with a stick etc.....it is an issue in the hot gold bearing streams and bedrock. The only way to quiet it is to increase delay.....I think NOT.
This in no way should reflect on any applications outside of AZ nugget hunting as I have no idea how ground will respond at a beach or nugget hunting in Alaska and so on.
So unless there is a physical size reason to use an 8" coil i would not get one. The 11" mono and DD will outperform their smaller coils in everyway......unless you are hunting in a 10" wide creek.

Great Post Scott!! My only question would be how do the 11 DD and the 11 Mono compare to one another in performance and abilities on both small gold and med/large gold?
Thanks

Well the 11" mono has a very very slight advantage over the DD in depth....but that is dependent on soil conditions. If the ground favors the mono then it is a better coil for deeper targets. But in hot creekbeds it is more chatty then the DD so the extra depth is lost as it is harder to hear the faint deep stuff.
As far as small nuggets they both are pretty close...the mono seems to have small advatage again but not a huge difference.
As far as medium to large gold the mono again has a bit more depth but this of course to be expected. These size targets are easier to hear with the mono in nasty ground even at depth as they have more presence in there sound than just the background chatter.
The deal with the mono in bedrock/ magnetite, baslat and all that stuff is to sweep slow and steady. Changes in coil height can sound off the threshold..usually this is only as the coil is lowered. The audio difference between the sound of a target and false thresh hits is easy to distinguish with just a day of use.
One nice thing about the GQ is that I run with no background thresh at all and loose no depth or target sensitivity. The farther below the point where thresh dissapears you go the less falsing you get from the ground. If you use a very good set of headphones that are not attenuated down this is a great way to run in noisy ground. I have a set of superphones and I turn them on and set my threshold well below the point where it dissapears.
Of course in ground that is not exceptionally hot I will turn the thresh up to the point where it just starts to drop out.

Scott - many thanks for taking your time to tell us about your Goldquest and coil experience. I now know more about the Goldquest than any other detector I have previewed before purchasing. Then if a DD coil should becomes available I would really be set for the gold county. I have a hot spot where we tried both the Minelab GP & 2200, but I just have a feeling the 10usecs Goldquest could also be put to good use in this spot. It would be interesting to see what might turn up. Lance in Santa Rosa, CA
