Some good news on Sov sensitiivity problem

I tried hooking up a 12v car battery to see if the battery was the problem. The Sov worked fine with the sensitivity set at 12:00. So just to make sure I reinstalled the nicad battery pack and it worked fine. So now I think the cold weather/snow was the problem. It was above freezing but I think the melting snow was just too cold on the coil.

I feel your battey wasnt fully charged. Maybe it too wasnt getting a good conection in the detector either, so clean to contact and try to pull the springs out a little too to help. Also it has been known that the battery cover will slide back a little too and not hold the battery tight. Another thing to check is your charger if you think the battery isnt charging, should be fully charged in around 10-12 hours for the factory nicad.

Well, whatever is was it ain't no more. Went to a city park and found a couple of wheaties, modern coins, a couple of nails and pull tabs. Dug one hole over a foot deep and finally gave up on it. The ten inch BBS coil is hard to learn on. I'm sure that the loads of trash did not help. Some signals seem like several pieces all scattered around, but I pulled out a nail and that's all there was (I hope). Kept getting a lot of broken signals that I could not isolate. Sound good from one side only. Got an S-8 coming. Received my meter rescale kit today so that should help, too. Thanks kindly to all for all the help and encouragement.

I'm fairly sure it wasn't the snow....

Now you get me worried again! LOL I got my meter rescaled so I hope to get out again tomorrow and try it out. I did notice some rust and corrosion on the meter readjust dial and that explains why I was having a little trouble setting it to 550 but that shouldn't explain why it was acting up without the meter hooked up. Anyway it's working fine now.
I did notice when I found the nails that the sound went quite a bit lower in all-metal mode. Can you use this as a guide to avoid nails? I have a lot to learn. Any tips on using the rescaled meter would be greatly appreciated. For instance, which numbers do you like and which ones do you avoid?

You will calibrate the meter to read 180 on a new dime or quarter while waving a quarter or dime accross the coil back and forth. Now any copper coin, clad or silver will read 180. The new zink pennies, some older wheaties and the IH will read 176-177 while a nickle should read 144-145. This will take care of most of your coins you will see. The fattie IH and a few others coins will read in with the pulltab numbers. A very deep coin also will not read correctly on the meter as it is so deep, but the tones and the meter will be trying to climb, so on these you will want to dig too. Infact i find if it is a positive signal that is weak and deep sounding that the tones and meter are trying to climb I like to dig as it is not the modern trash and usally a deeper coin or other good relic.
If you are new to the Sovereign I think you may want to dig a few of the positive signals just to see what some of the trash item read like on the meter and what tones they give.
Good luck
Rick

Thanks Rick. I read that I am supposed to check the signals in all-metal and the weak ones are the deep ones. Do you dig any targets that are hard to pinpoint? Seems these are the trash items, but I'm not sure.

I run in my disc mode to get the signals I want to dig or not. A deep one is a weak sounding one and will sound small too. These sometimes will not read the correct numbers on the meter, or even reach the correct tone as you will find out. For the first while untill you learn the Sovereigns tones I dont think you will notice these that much and should work with getting to know the tones and what the numbers will be.
Now after i get a signal that will sound and read the numbers I like I will switch to pinpoint to pinpoint this target. I also use the pinpoint mode to check some of the iffy signals too as sometimes iron will only give a one way signal in all metal pinpoint that you got a good signal in disc. Being you ask that question I thinnk maybe you have seen some of these already. A good signal is one that is repeatable in all metal pinpoint that dont move from where it was in disc other than another items next to the one you detected in disc. This is why I try to pinpoint with the tip of the coil in disc before I go to all metalpinpoint so I know which target I am picking up if it is trashy.
For most the first while this detector may be a bit confusing as it is differnt than anything you have used, but as you use it many thing will all come together and accualy it is a easy detector to use with accurate ID. Also dont try to take it to the very trashy areas right away, stick with the cleaner areas to learn it first. I think this may have been my problem as it took me almost a month to get used to it untill I took it to a older park with hardly no modern trash, then it was easy to use.

Yes, when I get to the trashy areas I want to give up. The 10 inch BBS is hard to work there. I try to work the iffy signals but probably give up too easily.
I am a bit concerned about the all-metal mode. My machine gives very faint signals. Does that sound like machine problems or the 10 inch coil won't pick up small items in all-metal? I'm learning but I think the S-8 coil is really going to help.
The rescaled meter works great. I still got some trash but I've been hitting the coins/nickels a lot easier and learning to avoid the aluminum. Found a couple of gold plated jewelry items and a couple more wheaties. The shreaded aluminum cans are still hard for me to deal with. If I find an area with lots of strong signals close together I make a quick check then I walk away from it.
