went to a very small town today and while there decided to try a former elementary school that was closed, turned into the local library, community center and a couple other things.
I found a few things, 3 nickels, 3 Mem pennies, a silver plated barette, part of a zipper, lock washer and lots of small pieces of crumpled foil. Was trying to figure out why there was so much foil. I gave up detecting mainly because of all the foil signals. At the van, another vehicle pulled in and I got to talk with a young man who went to the school when he was just a kid. He mentioned they closed the school when he was in the first grade. (To me that meant the school probably closed in the early 80s and so there might be some silver there.)
I asked if he had ever seen anyone metal detecting aroung there and the answer was no. Didn't find much around the swings so thought someone had been there before me.
I mentioned the foil. He kinda chuckled a little. I thought maybe they had like picnics there and the foil was from chicken. He held up his pizza he was eating and said that building across the street sells slices of pizza and they wrap it in aluminum foil. So now I know where the foil comes from. The Explorer II was set to discriminate the foil but it did seem to keep me from hitting it again and again.
So long story short, look at the neighborhood near where you are detecting...there may be a reason for a lot of trash of one particular type.
