sov gt at beach.

I understand from reading the forum messages either here or on other sites that the sov is either dead to small gold or won't pick up anything under a gram. Well just what is the smallest gold that it will pick up? i.e.: toe ring? earring back? etc. I realize that depth and ground conditions are major factors but I was thinking primarily of east coast florida beaches. Thanks.

I live on the West cost of Florida and have an Excalibur 2 with 10 inch coil. This is basically a waterproof Sovereign as they both employ the same BBS technology. Over the past year I have pulled out two small gold rings that weigh less than a gram so to me that is not too shabby.

dimes as deep as 15"..after trying over 200 detectors iv found for me nothing beats the Sovereign's and Excal's on salt beach. the CZ21 is close but not quite as good on iron ID. iv found studs 8+ " deep and the CZ21 wouldnt even hit on it laying on the ground....2 of my buddy's love there CZ21's but now they both are running GT's on the beach.

during september i hit local swimming lake which had been drained far enough down to expose the entire sand bottom swimming area... lots of people there mding.. i got there a month after metal detecting was open to the public.. my 1st time there with the gt i found a few deep coins , lots of bigger garbage .. i thought all the good stuff must be gone... however i got this tiny little hit which i normally wouldnt chase but having not dug a target in a while i figured lets see what it is... it turned out to be a small 14k charm right on top and my gt barely picked it up... i went home that day happy but also curious.... i took the gold charm home and experimented with it ... i took the time to see how the gt and whites 5900 would sound off on this charm and realized that the littlle weak chirp this item produced with both machines i must have heard a hundred times while on that beach but just dismissed as junk ... the next saturday i returned with a new stratagy.. dig every signal till i fugure out what is what.... to make a long story short i can tell you i dug more micro jewelry off that beach than i ever thought i could.. back to your original ???? i found the whites 5900 with the 5.3 inch coil more responsive to the tiny gold and i base this on the fact that i worked the same sand with both machines starting with the gt first.. the gt did sound off on some gold stud ear rings maybe 3inches deep and really think for that sized item that was the limit as far as depth was concerned.. i did eventually find a 10k tennis braclet and 14k chain that the gt wouldnt sound off on however the 5900 barely sounded off on them either but it was enough to make me look... i did find a class ring 14 inches deep with the gt... un fortunatly the 5900 wont work well in salty wet sand so all i can tell you is every once in a while when you get one of those tiny tiny signals dig it because tiny gold doesnt give a very good signal....

OK! Thanks for the helpful replies. Now, another question. Looking at some air test videos on u-tube, I notice that the recovery time on the Elite is pretty slow. One video in particular featured a gentleman in England who highly favored the Elite for the beach and fields but he did demonstrate that an iron nail would null out and not pick up a silver coin from at least a foot away before he got any signal on the coin. Of course I noticed that he only demonstrated it in one direction. Whether the Elite would have picked up the coin on the return swing I don't know. I mention this example because posts seem to suggest the the elite and GT are about the same in recovery time. How does the recovery time on the GT stack up against the cz-21? I am really counting on getting a machine that will pick up silver in close proximity to iron. Thanks for your patience.

the CZ21 has a much faster processor but its iron ID is no where near as accurate as the Sovereign..iv had 5 GT's and 2 Elites...i like the Elite the best of all of them. recovery time from null to a good target is plenty fast..iv used this Elite for 5 years and tried almost every detector made and nothing comes close to it on salt beach...iv found a Gold Ring in the same hole as a nail ! my swing speed is about 1 sec from left to right..i use a 12.5 S 12 coil and love it. my brother in law runs a CZ21 10" coil and i find many targets right behind him in his scoop drag marks! iv had 3 CZ20's and 2 CZ21's while they are good detectors on salt beach they didnt have the depth or the item ID as good as the Sovereign's...they would give low iron tone one direction and nickel mid tone in the other direction and end up being a silver ring. if a Sovereign null's ,,,its junk! iv not dug 1 bobby pin or 1 nail (except brass) in 5 years..other than the one that had a gold ring with it. i find my Excalibur 2 10" is the same as the Sovereign just not quite as deep..but waterproof! when someone makes a better beach detector i will buy it.until then ill just keep what iv got!

The Sovereign with stock coil might not be as sensitive to tiny gold as some other machines, but I guarantee you that it will hit gold rings (and coins) deeper than any machine out there. I've dug tiny earring backings with it. If you want to improve it's ability on tiny earrings and such then get a 12x10 or 15x12 coil (12x10 is even better at small target sensitivity, but both coils are an improvement over typical Minelab coils). I know of one person who had the S-12 and the 12x10 and the S-12 in testing was not as sensitive to small targets as the 12x10. This person also related about a thin gold chain that the 12x10 picked up and was very happy about that. I can say that tiny things like shoe lace holes and bits of aluminum bang much harder at depth with both SEF coils over the stock 10" coil, and the stock coil isn't exactly a slouch in that respect either.
