Sovereign GT Help

I bought a Sov GT on reading about its versatility and depth capabilities, however when using it in the All Metal Mode and Tracking and Auto Sensitivity I do not seem to get much depth, and what target responses I do get seem faint and wide, am I overlooking something in the operation of the unit? Any help appreciated, Thanks

Hi there Hobo oz'
Take a peek at this video http://youtu.be/q3sMeh6gm1c

Hello Hobo oz
I'm not sure about all GT's, but I know on mine I never use Auto sens, It's never tested well on my beach's. I use the Tor-8" coil and set my sens around the 9clock position. Yes it will get bumpy noises in the surf. But I usually stay in the wet sand only with my GT and hunt 2hrs before and 2hrs after low tide.If your using the stock 10" coil you'll probably want to keep your sens closer the the 12clock position. One more thing I like to do and maybe it's just me, but I like to set my GB, then set to fix. Then I walk along the shore in a lane, as opposed to walking up to dry then down to the wet.I'm sure others will say they like to keep theirs on track and walk from wet to dry, I've done that but I just think I always hit deeper targets hunting on fix set up.Like I said , it's probably just me :)
BTW you can always set up a test bed in the sand. Get your GB set and test your depth. Then put on the track feature and walk around some, then come across your test bed and see if you can hit your deep targets.

Good Luck!
Ken

My Sovereigns are deeper in discrimination mode. I never use auto unless I just can't settle the detector down on my own. I use tracking because I am back and forth between dry and wet sand.

I am more of a old park and ballfeild hunter and find that disc is deeper and I have the tone ID I need so I don't dig iron and can tell the good from the bad targets so easy. With the Sovereign you get the depth from experience with the detector and going slow to see many of those deep targets others have missed. To begin with the sensitivity is recommended to run in auto to make learning the Sovereign tones in disc much easier and once you know them then going to manual sensitivity will be not as smooth threshold, but you will hear those little tones of deep targets you would not hear in auto.
In disc there is no ground balance, but in all metal there is with the auto ground balance and if you like to use all metal for some reason and the ground don't change much I would track and then lock it. Tracking is good where the ground changes a lot and when you get a signal you want to check out further you will probably have to lock it then check it out more so the signal don't get tracked out.
Mine is set with the iron mask on for my hunting, sensitivity around 11-12 o'clock position with threshold on, the track/lock /pinpoint in pinpoint as this control is only active when the toggle is set to all metal so once I get my target i can switch to all metal and pinpoint the target and size it up to see if it is one I want to dig or not.
The Sovereigns are excellent detectors once you get to know them and they do have some excellent depth and can see good targets better in with trash then most as it give you the operator the info with the tones and lets you decide to dig or not, not like the beep and dig detectors. Many give up before they learn the Sovereigns and i am sure you will be like some of us that have doubt on ever buying a Sovereign, but stick with it and don't give up, the more you use it the more you will learn and the better it will get.

Good Luck.

Rick

dont fear, I was hunting in all metal and befor this i tested it in Auto and it was not to deep , I then after some experimentation found that a bit past 3:00 and i was getting a great signal at 9" but dont forget to turn up your coil volume to 2:30 and ground balance then you will see better results if the volume is to high it will blurr the signal

your soil conditions will ditermine how much sensitivity you can use so pracktice in ground and tune it in

Thanks for the help to all, I will try the suggested settings and I'm sure I will get better performance from the unit, once again, thanks,
Tony

Remember The GT's Sensitivity dial is back wards....... Also you do not need high Sensitiviy on The GT ....I keep mine at around 2 o clock and dig targets over 9 inch's at my Beach...... smaller coils like the 8 inch can handle higher sensitivity ......................Good Luck
