Sovereign meter

Detector Man

Active member
someone is selling a meter....is that something that will improve pinpointing or ? i have no clue......is it "required" accessory?

in reading their ad i m getting that there are two types of meter(?) is that so and which one is preferable
im negotiating for a sovereign currently.

Thank you for your inputs

A meter on the Sovereign detector gives a numeric readout. With a "180" meter items like silver, Clad quarters and dimes read 180 on the meter while zinc pennies read in the 176-177 range. Each type of metal that you pass the coil over will have a different numeric readout.

Having the meter just gives you a visual confirmation of what the tones from the machine are telling you.

You would do well in contacting, Ron from Michigan. Check on this page for his posts and send him a PM.

In the Minelab meter there has been 3 they made, the first the bar graph, the 550 and the 180 meter with the 180 the one most like and I have kits to convert the 550 ones to 180. Sun Ray made the first 180 meter when Minelab only had the bar graph meter as we found it was much more practical than the Minelab meter. There was other company's that made meters too for a while and one that was a bit different and many really like was the Patriot meter made by Joe Patrick, it was a analog meter and had a light for nite hunting like the Sun Ray DTI 3 had.
The 180 seem to be the most popular and I tried them all and i agree the 180 worked the best for me as the different tones of the Sovereign are hard to tell the difference in with your ears, so with the numbers of the meter you can see the difference easy between a zinc penny and a copper penny. Myself I feel a Sovereign with a 180 meter is the most accurate ID you will find, but you also have to know how to use a Sovereign well and doing a slow sweep for the deep ones and working the tones and watching the meter to get the tones to reach as high as you can as that is when the meter will read correct as possible.
The only person that makes a 180 right now is Ron our Moderator and the price is the best you will see, even lower than used meters.
Good luck with the Sovereign if you get one and have patience with it as it is different and once learned it maybe the best you have ever used, this detector give you the info you need so you the operator can decide to dig or not. The more you use it the more you will learn and the better the finds will get, just ask any of the people here that has learned the Sovereign well as many I am sure will tell you many of the worked to death site are popping out older and deeper finds.

Ron's meter is spot on. I have 2 of them and they work great. They really have nothing to do with pinpointing though. I just "X" the spot in a semicircle in disc mode and am usually always within about a 6" diameter. Good luck and HH!
