I have a Sov that all of a sudden won't work.
I tried 3 different batteries and an alkaline pack. If I listen closely, I can slightly hear it come on, when I turn it on-with or without headphones-tried both. Got any ideas what to check?

sometimes it will come on ok and run great, sometimes it will come on and run very very eratic and make sounds like it is falsing or coil has a hole in it............if i jiggle it pushing down at the same time..............B I N G O
just like brand new
once in awhile, i turn it on and nothing.
my two cents.............it just starting doing this several months ago...............and i do not use it very much lately, but i have been using it since the meamorphis is occuring on my exp II

Hey Chuck,
Try waving a coin past it when it should be on. Listen for a weak sound. If it's there, the rest of the circuit is working properly and you probably have a bad potentiometer or audio amplifier stage.
Also, check for loose wires and look for bad solder joints. A good solder joint looks smooth and shiny. A bad one might have cracks or look grainy.
You could send it to me and I could take a look at it, fix it, test it for a few months, and eventually send it back to you...

I was hunting in the rain once and fried the audio output fet located on the small pc bd with the main controls, I lost the audio output but the meter response was still there. I replaced it with a heftier fet in a metal T05 style can. But there is a lot of other things that could be causing your problems. I posted the schematic for the main part of this detector several months ago on the Geotech forum. As to the Grave digger problem, my Sovereign started falsing a lot and I took a box cutter to the adhesive seam on the coil and was able to slide it apart and found that water had made its way through the cable entry and coroded the wire apart that connects the ground to the conductive coating on the paper static shield. It had also started to corode the pre-amp BD. but I was able to easily repair it and bond the coil shell back togeather with RTV type silicone.
