sovereign vs quattro

Don't have a Sovereign but have had an Excal 1000 for a year. Using it on the beach and salt water. Really like it as have found some good finds with it. Picked up a used Quattro in Feb and am on my third cycle on my rechargables. Love the machine. Have just started to use it on the beach, and the most striking thing I have noticed is I am finding nickels, and a fair number of them and on a regular basis. Nickels were pretty rare with the Excal and I dig everything at the beach. I have used it enough now I can pretty much tell a nickel hit by sound. They hit 14-15 on display, rarely a quick 16. Because of this, I am hoping to find little more gold in the wet an dry sand, knowing most of the good stuff is in the water. BTW, I think having used an Excal, and in your case a Sovereign, makes using the Quattro easier.

I was thinking of buying a sovereign just before I bought my Quatro. I know a guy in a local detector club that has the sovereign and loves it. He finds a bunch of good stuff. I ended up getting the Quatro, partly because it has more frequencies, and partly because it's got the computer chip stuff which I thought might make it respond faster over all, but I'm not sure about all that. I just know I love the Quatro, and it goes very deep and has notable discrimination, which I like and is very sensitive. It's more bucks, but if I were you, I'd think twice about giving up your sovereign. I'd keep the sovereign and either get the Quatro or go all the way to the Explorer or Explorer SE. I really think the entire Mine lab line is a great line of detectors, once you get into the multi frequency range. From there it's mainly a matter of extra goodies, more information to decide on whether to dig or not, and some other stuff. In other words, you really "get what you pay for" with a Mine lab, in my opinion.

Hello Paul, have a chat to Stan from Australia. He went from a Sovereign to the Quattro. He still has his Sovereign, but he'll explain the differences between the two, and why he made the change.
Cheers Golden:detecting:

What and where do you normaly detect, that is the biggest question here. Depending on where you will be spending most of your time detecting then I could give you an answer.
Cheers!

Hi Paul nj.
Well i had the sovereign for 11 years before i went to the quattro. The sovereign was an still is a good detector. The discrimination on the gt sovereign is no better than the model before. The quattro has got more depth and the notching is ahead by miles. It is a little slow in recovery from target to target and you have to slow down in searching to alow for this and it takes a little while to get use to like all detectors there is a learning time. I got Andy Sabisch book Mastering the Quattro right from the start and it helped a lot.Generally i search in all metal and manual sensitivity and run it as high as you can without falsing. Also if you use high trash it is not as accurate as low trash with discrimination. What i do is search in high trash and back to low trash this will give me a more accurate reading on the target.

Hope this helps a little Regards Pinpointa down under in oz.

hi aim new to this hobby my mate has a sovereign he says it the best detector he has ever had when i went out with him using a sovereign he used to get about 30 to 40 more coins than i now i got a quattro and am only about 5 to 10 behind him iam over the moon with my quattro but he still say sovereign is better i think its down to your own personal opinion

I like what your saying about searching in high trash mode, to find a possible good target, then switching to low trash mode to get more accrucy. Sounds like a pretty good plan. Marc.

Hello Paul. Golden mentioned that I might be able to give you a few pointers in the difference between the Sovereign GT and the Quattro. I have tried a few detecting machines over the last 18 years or so. I found that the Garrett was probably the best when I kicked off years a go and they still make a handy unit. I changed to the Minelab brand when the second Sovereign became available the XS model about 10 -11 years back. I used it until about 12 months ago when I changed to the Quattro I was looking for more depth. I made the right choice as on average it is about one and half to two inches deeper than my old sovereign XS and the Sovereign GT as I tried one for about 4-6 weeks before I changed to the Quattro and in all honesty I found that for my self the Sov GT was no better than my old one except for a few extra switches and attempting to add-on a all metal side to the detector for gold hunting. It was flat out picking up a signal on a one gram gold nugget swiping it across the coil. I did a simular report on this same subject some time back and will have extra information. I will try and find it in the archives and cut and past it on the end of this post. I tried to find the other post from about after the middle of last year in the archives but had no luck. If you still want more information get in touch with me. All the best. Stan. From down under Australia.

Hi Stan, just wondering how your foot's going! Hope it's much better than it was. Nothing worse than being laid back from detecting!!!
See ya! Angela

Hello Angela. No good with my foot still pretty bad. Went to the hospital and had a MRI scan done this week after seeing an orthopaedic doctor who said I should have had surgery and a pin or plate inserted in the first place after looking at my x rays taken three weeks apart. It appears that the x-rays were not read correctly at the x-ray premises and left the two separate doctors not being abele to make a decision until my own doctor of 25 years coming back from holidays I go back to the hospital on Tuesday for the MRI results and the decision of the orthopaedic doctors. Wish me luck and if surgery is on the books lets hope they get it right. In the mean time I will be reading the forum and all the best .Stan. From. Australia.Dowjn under.
