As a small child, my family lived on the north side of the channel next to the U.S. Coast Guard station, in Grand Haven. Our house isn't there any more, as it was replaced with a new home several years ago and the boat house, of the coast guard station, isn't used any more either. I use to awake each morning to the sound of the surf and freighters sounding their horns, as they entered the channel. In the summer months, I'd sit on the rocks and fish for 12" perch in the channel. Back then there wasn't a cement walkway like there is now. It was just a long row of really big rocks stacked next to each other all the way out to the pier, on both sides of the channel.
