Gday :ausflag:

I am going to buy some gaiters to use as snake protection
we have some pretty agro "Joe Blakes" (snakes) around here and the paddock grass is high this year form Winter rains

Can anyone recommend a good, comfortable pair ?
Also hopefully not too hot to wear would be great
Thanks good people :)

You might want to check out some of the local detecting shops. I was looking at those very items (which are designed specifically to stop snake bites). They were $110. the price. Nuggets From Downunder was the site I saw them on, but I'm pretty sure you'll find them at most of the bigger detecting shops.

I found mine at an army disposal store, $30. The only problem is a snake got me on the left elbow while i was clearing some loose scrub last sat.
12hrs observation and all is well for me, i hope the brown snake can get the taste out of its mouth!
Mark Pollard.

Yes Mark, that'll teach him to have a chew on you eh ?
The $30 ones are they the black ex army ones ?

Mick , what ?? $110 are they made from $20 bills ? I 'll have to get a 2nd mortgage:shocked:
Hikers ones are half that price and look good

The Turtle Skin Gaiters are quite expensive. But you might take a look at the Whitewater Gaiters at about 35% - 40% the price. I've not had a pair but the online reviews seem to be good. HH Randy

Yes Terra , ex army ones. I have looked at the new ones at gold city for $110 and i do like the new metarels for comfort and air flow. I think worth the money for my area .

Howdy Terra,
We were just over your way (Gold Coast),and saw some snakes (in captivity).thankfully we don't have them over here.

Snakes.... you want snakes come into the bush with me, black snakes come from miles around
when I am in the bush, maybe they think I am tasty or something.

get the best gaiters you can afford, and I always wear my gumbies to, hot or cold.

Get a pair of decent Gaiters like these from Miner's Den or Bendigo Gold World. They are made in the USA and are rated for Rattlesnake Strikes (Rattlesnakes hit harder than Australian snakes when they strike and they have much longer fangs). I bought mine off Ebay but they cost the same to buy them here nowadays.... also, if you have a problem fitting them (they come in two or possible three sizes), you can easily exchange them for the right size or simply try them on.

Poorman's choice: $19 gumboots from Bunnings.... but you will sweat in them in summer and gumboots give you blisters.

Bugger the gumboots guys ...I would be sloshing in my own sweat after an hour
Guess I'll try an upmarket pair..you guys are right what price does one put on a fang free leg ?
Just found a gaiter with a new fabric callled Superfabric made up like armour plating I think but breathes ...could be the way to go for hot as hell South Aussie Summers

666 ...IMHO most blacks are not too bad and go the other way (I grew up in NSW and saw heaps) but still remind me not go hunting with you mate :)
King Browns are the cranky, stand their ground (or advance) agrro nasties and very common here
Nero...very nice ! fashionable too ;) If thats you in the pic, they go well with your nice looking Cuban type boots
Thanks for the great replies
