Steelhead Fishing in Idaho

Dan-o

New member
My Daughter and I went Steelhead fishing for the first time this weekend. She landed a 25" Steelhead Salmon that took 10-15 minutes to get in. She did an amazing job.

We also caught several smaller trout in the 8"-16" range.
We had a blast.

Thanks for lookin.

Steelhead and Rainbow Trout are the same species of fish. The difference between the two are that the rainbow trout remain in fresh water, while the steelhead are anadromous - living in both fresh water and the ocean for parts of their lives. Steelhead basically start out as a Rainbow Trout, they make their way from certain rivers in Idaho to the ocean were they spend 1-4 years getting big. Then they make the return journey to the same area of river in Idaho. Unlike other Salmon species, Steelhead do not die after spawning.

Idaho-born steelhead and salmon make one of the longest spawning runs of any anadromous fish in the world. Juvenile fish ride the spring floods from Idaho's high mountain streams to the Pacific Ocean 900 miles to the west. After feeding on the ocean's riches for one to four years, adult fish fight their way back up the Columbia and Snake rivers, crossing eight huge dams, to return to pristine spawning streams. These long migrations created some of the strongest strains of ocean-run fish in the world.

Once you clean both a Rainbow and a Steelhead, the difference in flesh is very apparent. Rainbow have a white flesh, while Steelhead have a nice Pink flesh.
These fish can put up one helluva fight.
