Stereo or Mono Headphones

TURNMASTER

Active member
I went to get a lightweight set of around the neck headphones(for the heat of summer) and ran into the issue of which ones will work.

Do I need to get the stereo or mono. I found a set made by phillips that were fairly rugged and water resistant and made for sporting purposes. However I ran into the issue of the adapter not being good enough for a secure connection and am unsure wether or not they actually worked or not. I think not, so I returned the whole works and am asking here. None of the local stores has the Koss that I believe Randy recommended.

Any input would be appreciated.

I've used Gray Ghosts for quite a few years. Most headphones made for detecting have a Stereo/Mono toggle switch because some brands use Stereo output and some use Mono. As far as I know, Minelab detectors are wired in the Mono layout. My XL Pro is wired as Stereo. On my Gray Ghosts, I flip the toggle up for the XLPro and down for my Minelabs. I have a set of Koss UR-30's, but I like the Gray Ghosts so much I've not taken the Koss out of the bag. As far as small, lightweight "summer" headphones, I have a cheap pair of Garrett Ace headphones that work well with my Minelabs. If I recall, they were less than $20. If you get a pair that is Stereo and does not have the capability to switch to Mono, you can do it yourself by rewiring the connector. JMHO HH Randy

Hi

Down here in Australia it gets hot and I like to use sports ear bud style (sports type has the wrap around the back of the ear holding arms to keep them secure)
I use Stereo earbuds with in- line volume control and a 3.5-6mmm (stereo) adapter so it fits the Minelab headphone jack
- I tried a mono 3.5-6mm adapter once and sound only came through one to one ear instead of both ears which was crap so get the stereo if u want sound in 2 ears
They cost me the princely sum of $15 + $2 for the adapter and work brilliantly on both my Etrac and Xterra

I actually prefer the comfort and super weight of these over my Grey Ghosts but you can still hear outside noises
and so they are not a good choice when working on a windy day at the beach with crashing waves or next to a busy road etc

Thanks Gents, I will remember to let you know which I get and how I like them.

It cooled off to low 70's for this weekend so I should be ok for now (if I can get out).
