Hi Fred,

Looks like a melted lump of something, that is for sure. Supposedly was oxidized, so not gold of any reasonable purity. You never can tell, however. It could have been a gold plated item that melted in a fire, so there might be a little gold in it. My local refiner charges $50 for an assay so if a guy was $50 curious he could find out. I'd guess the piece is not big enough or the possible gold content high enough to warrant it.
