stock coil question

Most of the comments and reviews I've read about the MXT have been very good. But, I have seen some criticisms of the stock coil. Usually the criticism is that it's noisy.

I'm in Southern California and hunt for coins and jewelry mostly in parks, tot lots, empty lots, shool yards and occasionally at salt beaches. I'd also like to try some prospecting.

I was wondering what the MXT owners here felt about the stock coil. I'm thinking of buying an MXT but I don't think I can afford a second coil just yet. Do you think it's still an excellent machine with the stock coil?

Hello Eddy,

The stock coil works well over all, The 6x10 eclipse double D coil sound like the coil you will need for what you described in your post. you also may want to get when you can the 5.3 eclipse or the 3x6 eclipse double D for trashy areas. All the coils listed work very well.The MXT is a little noisy with all the coils, just a characteristic of the detector.

Manufacturers make accessory coils because there is a need and applications where they do better. Aftermarket coils are also made for the same reasons.

The stock 950 coils are 'OK' for more open areas with lower trash levels, such as open beaches or out in the sportsfields.

They are not so good when hunting 'tot lots' and other places where you need to work closer to metal structures.

The MXT is, by design, just noisier reghardless of the coil in use.

The Matrix M6 is quieter in operation, will handle all of the coin and jewelry hunting sites you mentioned, and can do almost as well for casual nugget hunting.

With the money saved you can invest in at least one optional coil. My personal opinions on a second coil, that would probably be used most of the time, is .. #1.. the 4

Hi Eddie,

I like the stock coil. The MXT is "noisier" than most coin detectors due to its high gain design. I have lots of accessory coils, but I think the stock coil is best for general use.

My favorite accessory coil is the White's 6"x4" Shooter DD coil.

That little 4X6 is quite the coil in trash and will get you finds others walk over. The main coil i use is the 6X10 on the MXT for my hunting as i like it better than the stock coil, but the stock coil too is a good one.
Many say the MXT is a noise one, but to me I am used to a threshold detector and find that the MXT is quiet compared to my Sovereign or Explorer. I hear some interference,but don't run my gain at max either, but enough so the detector is stable, good depth and only the target not disc will lock right on. If I get a iffy one or weak one I may up my gain to check it out, but back it down when done.
