Stock XS coil cover

I have the XS, i've read where the loop needs to rub the ground, if I use it with out the cover will it get better depth? and will it eventuly wear a hole in it if the cover is not used. I hunt every thing from grass to sand to gravel. Opinions appreciated.

The cover is maybe .080 thick and does not block a magnetic field so at most you would get .080 more depth.
I hunt without my coil cover all the time because sand and dirt get between the cover and coil which can cause the machine to false and be unstable. The coil shell is quite thick, park/woods hunting isn't going to bother it, dragging it across a sandy beach day after day might though.

Lets put it this way...Explorer hates air and should be hunted with a flat sweep. As far as the coil cover to me provides additional protection with little loss of depth as its thin at best. Would take a lot to wear a coil thru unless you perhaps hunted rocky ground and sand after a time will also wear it. Explorer coils are easy to remove to extract the debris that it picks up cost much less than a new coil and if need be a clear sealent can be applied to prevent it filling up with debris. Matter of choice pro or con..but protects the coil if you decide to upgrade and your unit will be worth more with an unscratched cover...

Seems like a bright idea....( would check) the contents so what your using doesn't have a mineral content that may or may not interfer with unit...
