straight rod project

Can't go out in this weather since the ground is frozen... I made a straight rod for my older minelab musketeer. I found a gardentools rod in the hardware store that fitted precisely over the lower rod. Then I attached the bar-end [mountainbike] to the rod. After placing the minelab parts, I think the result looks good...:thumbup:

The rod is made of aluminium and has a tightening screw below where the minelab rod slides in. Turn the knob and tight as can be! A part of the rod was covered with rubber but it just took that away. Brand of the rod is Gardena and i guess I payed 12 euro's for it. [$16]

Very nice setup. People might also check into window cleaning poles They even have a locking nut on them. I'm aiming at using one of those new style single pole crutches people have been using for their detectors. Arm cup and hand grip already on them and I hear very light. Just need to find a Goodwill or resale shop that has one cheap.
 
See the GT Mods thread in the modification forum for further details, but after a long search at various stores yesterday I found a professional Unger window cleaning pole's (they sell several height sizes of these) inner extension rod is the same diameter as the upper GT shaft. Slides right over the lower rod. It's a thinner aluminum and so much lighter than the GT's stock upper shaft, but it's still very stiff. An added bonus is that the pole has a two pin adjustment pin that's used to hold the plastic tool holder on top. The GT only has a single snap pin but if you drill your adjustment holes all the way through the shaft instead of just on one side the two pin one works fine and will stiffen things up better than the single pin style that comes with the GT.

Just cut the aluminum tube to the same length as the GT's upper shaft and then drill all the same holes out that the GT shaft has, but drill the adjustment holes all the way through for the two headed pin if you are going to use that. I'm going to post some weights of the stock shaft with nothing on it compared to this one for the weight savings.

Now I just need to get my Whites lower carbon shaft ($10). I hope they are the same diameter as the GT's. Think I heard they fit fine?
