STRANGE AIR TEST

brendon

New member
G'day all, Im fairly new to this site, Was air testing my x-terra 305 last night and noticed that it would pick up a target (aussie 1 dollar coin) about 12 inches away,But this was only when i moved the target past the coil quickly. When i moved it past slowly it would'nt register at all. I thought you got more depth when moving slowly, i know this was only an air test but does it make much difference,Still has stock 9 inch concentric on it, Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the X-TERRA forum. Although air tests don't really prove much as far as depth is concerned, I do think we can learn a lot about the behavior of certain coils. What you've mentioned about speed is correct in that you can move the coil so slowly that it will ignore the target. That is basically true with any VLF motion detector. If you were to put it in the pinpoint mode, (non-motion) you'd find that the depth may not be as good. But the speed can be much slower. When I get a hit on a target that I suspect is going to be a good one, I can sweep the coil back and forth over it, at varying speeds, and the sounds that the target makes will help me determine whether to dig or not. Junk will typically "break up" in tone as you speed up the sweep. My US coins will usually sound the same with each pass of the coil, regardless of how fast you sweep over them. JMHO HH Randy
