Strange behavior of 505

Today I had a behavior I have never had before with Xt 505. Last weeks' hunt was amazing finding coins 12'' deep but today could n't discriminate a copper coin from iron in 2'' air testing. I 've been for hunt today and half an hour later could not find anything, I was quite curious about because I could hear coin like tones but was breaking the tones so I did n't dig them. I did an air test to check that with a copper coin and my detector could n't see it at 2'' inches from the ground with a coins tone but could see it like a nail. I had sensitivity 18, threshold 10, sound 99, volume 28. The coils wire on the control box was just a bit loose. Tightening the wire did n't change anything. After that I left the hunt and when I came home I took off the coils cover and there was some dirt soil in it. When I cleaned it I made another air test and looks to be better, it can see the coin now. Did anybody have the same experience or is it something I should worry about? Thanks for help in advance.

I has been known to happen. Mineralized dirt gets trapped between the coil and cover, and afterward your GB isn't accurate, so it throws off everything.

It's good periodic maintenance to remove the cover and clean it and the coil.

Thanks a lot old Longhair, I was worried a bit to be honest cause of my hunts before I found staff really deep and I was so happy about this detector and the last hunt disappointed me.

That's why I NEVER use a coil cover... i hunt a lot of fields, constr, sites and sidewalk tearouts with exposed dirt so in those types of areas you can get a lot of dirt in between the coil and cover in a very short period of time. NO cover for me......

Also you can run in to areas that the mineralization is so high that your not going to be able to get a good signal on a coin deeper then 3" to 4" deep and even then the signal can be bad. In places like that you do not hunt by the tones or numbers so much as you do by depth..
