Strange signals.. help on using my MXT?

Florida-Hunter

New member
I just got home from using my MXT at a local beach... I was getting a lot of strange signals today, and I realized fairly quickly that there was a lot of little chunks of black iron, here and there. Probably a rusting boat sunk off shore, or maybe pieces of the steel used on the sand breakers.

I noticed I would get a signal, usually a broken one, that would show as a coin... However when I checked the depth it wouldn't register... Or sometimes I'd get a dull tone all around the target in depth mode, but the tone would go silent just above the supposed target? Does that mean simply that the target was deeper than 12 inches? Or could I just be getting false readings due to the iron bits? I also had many signals where it would show nothing on the VDI, yet there was a strong signal, and again nothing would show on the depth. Most of these signals were faint, and I tended to only dig the strong solid signals.

I also had many faint signals that would read foil, on the first pass, nothing on a second pass, then a nickel or ring... Basically giving multiple readings.

I was considering going back to the same spot but with a smaller search coil, to see if this helps at all.

Any ideas about what's going on here?

Thanks!

By the way I had the MXT set to salt part of the time, and salt to trac part of the time, and set in Coin/Jewelry mode. I was walking just above the water line, damp to wet sand.

The MXT isn't the best saltwater machine. Maybe think about using a different coil like a DD for the mineralization. Also sounds like your beach might be full of trash, so the smaller coil might be a good idea as well. Remember, you are looking for good repeatable signals with th VDI staying roughly in the same range and not bouncing around a whole bit. Not saying that that is the hard and fast rule, but it is what I have noticed and read from others. Or, you can just dig it all and find out for sure
