Sunday trip to woods turns out ok

small change

New member
Since it warmed up & melted off all the snow I decided to try & venture out. I only have been out twice since the end of last November. Even though Saturday was the warmer of the two, I decided to go Sunday instead, using Saturday as a melt/thaw day since I wasn't sure what the ground would be like when I got there. The woods was a place where boy scouts had camped in the past.It has since been taken over as a county park, but still remains undeveloped, as there are no roads thru it. I ended up parking on a subdivision street where some newer housed had been built right up to the edge of the park. Most of the area, I found out has some very steep hillsides & not a lot of flat areas. I was trying to find flat places where maybe tents would have been pitched, but I ended up finding four or five old concrete foundations/debris areas where old cabins were. The scouts must have stayed in those.

Those cabins were also right on the top of a pretty steep bluff. Maybe 10-15 ft beyond them was the edge which wasn't a sheer cliff but steep enough you would have had to rappel down it. I did have a pretty good view of the Meramec River below and could see pretty far beyond it. I was disappointed in trying to look around the foundations as there are a lot of old pieces of rusty sheet metal many of which were large enough to overload the SE. I don't think there would be much of a chance at all of finding any coins right around the foundations unless considerable effort was taken to clean up & remove the old rusty stuff. For a long time, all I had found was a clad dime, a wheat cent, & a couple of memorials.

Well, there was a walking path that led from the edge of the subdivision cul-de-sac around past the old foundations, so finally I concentrated on it. Sweeping down the center of it I finally had some luck & turned up a Mercury. Not much after that except a few wheats & more memorials. Where I had my best luck was when I searching just about one average sweep width off of the edge of the trail. I ended up finding the two silver quarters, & two more Mercs that way. One Merc was 4-5" deep, but all the other coins were less than that. It's been my experience that coins found in the woods don't seem to be near as deep as ones in parks. Spent nearly all day there (from 9 to about 5). Found most of the silver in the last couple of hours or so. A good part of the time was spent (maybe wasted) walking down & up some of the slopes looking for other promising looking spots but I think all I did was wear myself out in the process & make sure that my legs will be really sore for a few more days.

All, in all it turned out pretty good. Six silver coins is a pretty good outing, even if it took all day to find them. Ended up with 11 wheats so the silver/wheat ratio was great. Also found was an aluminum token with a hole shot thru the middle of it that says "Woodtreat AA 1967" on one side & the same on the other except the year was 1966. I believe it was some sort of alcoholics anonymous token. Two clad dimes & 12 memorials was all of the "new" money found. Think I may try this place at least one more time this winter/spring before it gets too warm/humid to be out in the woods. Anyway, heres photos of the finds.
Take care & HH,
Dan.
