Sunray S-8 VS Minelab Coinsearch coil

Are both equal in depth and stability? I'm sure this topic might have come up before. I land hunt all the time,so there is no submersing the coils in water. I know the Sunray is epoxy filled as opposed to the Coinsearch. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also...what do you think of the Sunray S-5? Over rated or just as deep(or almost) compared to the S-8?

The Coinsearch is deeper, but not water proof. Both coils are stable.Value wise the Coinsearch is a great deal..The S-5 has no depth compared with either the S-8 or Coinsearch.I think the Coinsearch for park hunting is the better coil. For shallow water go with the S-8.I have used all these coils and have found the little 7 inch Tornado or BBS to be a better coil for depth and separation.I don't like the S-5 it may separate, but the targets will be shallow.HH Ron

Im in agreement with Rons statement. I wish Minelab had continued production of the coinsearch longer than they did but understand the reasoning as the Sov really stands out at the beach.

The 8 inch Coinsearch is one great coil if you are not water hunting, much better than the Minelab 8 BBS coil in my opinion. For a beginner the 8 inch coinsearch is the best coil to learn the Sovereign with as to me the hot band of the coil is bigger and will keep the tone longer so it is easier to learn it. Now the S-8 of Sun Rays is also a great coil and found that it seems to work better in trash as the hot band to me is smaller and can see between trash items better and separate better too. On depth the S-8 we found goes a little deeper too, but for this you must know your Sovereign well. One of the guys I hunt with tried mine when I had it and bought it after taking it to a park he worked well along a road with his 8 inch coinsearch to see if the S-8 was better and he did real well the the S-8 and said he was digging some deeper merc dimes and a standing lib quarter he knows was over 13 inches deep, so this sold him on the S-8 and used that coil until he bought a Explorer. On the 5 inch coil I found I was better off with the S-8 as the separation was so good and the depth was better too, but I am sure in real heavy trash the 5 inch would work better, but it would have to be very heavy trash. The new 8 inch Tornado coil I never really got a chance to use the one I bought from Neil a few years back as I had someone come into the shop and wanted to buy it, but hope to get another one someday to try.

I have the BBS minlab 8and i can get a dime at 7" good but not at 8" unless i put it in all metal then i can hear the 8" and even the 9" dime I have not tried the S_8 but rumer has it it goes deeper but i wanted better seperation so I got the minlab

By my way of thinking if I want seperation then I want to max that out and depth is secondary. That's why I opted for the S-5, which is 5.5" in size. It gets somewhere in the 7 to 8" depth range on a silver dime which is outstanding in my soil. Other brand detectors I've owned using a larger coil are lucky to get 7.5" of depth on a dime in my soil, so the depth the S-5 is getting is nothing to sneeze at. Note that I know it at least gets 6" on a dime but in my air tests I'm pretty sure it's doing 7 or 8" or at least somewhere in that range of 6-8".
