my surf pi has a p marked on the gain set adjustment is this the proper place to set the gain , what happens if you set it for more gain .I hate to waste huntin time trying to figure out the right settings , this is all new to me!thanks for any input

Pumping up the gain will give you more sensitivity. However, too much sensistivity will make it harder for you to detect. This is because you will be experiencing a lot of falsing and those faint signals will be harder to hear.
Set the threshold to a comforble background hum, and bring up the gain to where the threshold starts to become erratic. Bring it back from that point 1/16 of a turn. If you experience falsing and ghost singals, bring it back some more. This is an excercise youll be doing every time you get to the beach and ever so often while hunting.
