Swapt 14 Trade Tokens for these!:surprised:

I know a guy that collect's Trade Tokens and I have been finding quite a few this year and decided to trade them off. Last year I traded off some other Token's I had for an 1886-s $5 Gold Piece in AU Condition. This year I traded the same guy 14 Tokens for these Coins. 4 Walking Liberty Halves dated 1917,1942,1942-s, and 1943-d. I also got another $5 Gold Piece dated 1893. The Gold Piece looks way better than the pic since it has all Shield Lines and it is in AU Condition. Just can't turn down GOLD I guess.[attachment 34567 Walkers.jpg][attachment 34565 5GoldPieceFront.jpg][attachment 34566 5GoldPieceBack.jpg]

there's a guy up your way (Minnesota if I remember right) that several local club members have done business (trades tokens for silver or gold coinage) with in the past. Once he learned of our club, he called us all for a couple years asking if we'd found anything he might be interested in. I always disapointed him as I don't sell finds. Just wondered if it might be the same guy. Seemed too similar to be a coincidence. :)

I sell mine to him too and got a very nice 1880 $5 gold piece last year for one dog tag I found labor day weekend. What made it good was it was a 1888 ND tag, so it was one year before ND became a state.

I still have some Tokens that he is after and told him maybe we could work out another deal towards a Gold Coin. I was just like you with my Tokens but after meeting him and talking with him, I decided to trade Tokens for Gold Pieces. Might be something for you to look into if you like Gold rather than Tokens. Good Luck and HH.

I figured it just had to be Gary. He definitely seems to be a real nice guy and he bends over backwards to make the customer happy with the trade. And yes, Gold coins are always tempting. :)

The gold coin is very nice!

I did make a big mistake back in the late 70s with my tokens I had. I was told from our local metal detector dealer at that time that they would never be worth anything and he had a good friend that would pay a buck apiece, so most of us sold ours. I had over 200 of them by then and only wish I would have kept them as I know talking to Gary I had a few good ones.
Just goes to show that some of the finds we find should be checked out before being sold as there is people out there trying to rip us off.
Just like my dog tag I got the gold $5 gold coin for, just thought it was old and wasn't worth much, but when I mentioned it to Gary he was honest to tell me what it was worth, plus gave me many option including $200 cash, but I like gold as I cant spend it right away like cash.

Anytime I can add a Gold Coin to my collection is a huge PLUS. But I do wish I still had those Tokens since they are neat to find and who knows just how rare they are. I know they are they are a lot rarer than the majority of the coins found but if you don't know, I guess I will settle for Gold anytime especially in AU condition. Good Luck and HH.

But it sounds like some of those tokens that you're finding (esp. that 1888 dog tag) are possibly quite rare with maybe only a few in existence. There's no doubt that gold coin is nice, but there's still a lot of them around as opposed to some of those tokens (dog tags). If it had been me I would have considered keeping those tokens, etc. for their historic value. But that's me - I get a bigger kick out of digging a real interesting relic than digging a silver, though relatively common, coin.

Either way great job, and congratulations.

you also have to remember that every time a detectorist goes out and finds one of these Tokens, it just makes them that more common. It is hard to say if one Token is a lot rarer than another unless you have some kind of proof of quantity minted or if it came from an early ghost town that you know that was in existence for a limited period of time. Rick(ND) is the one that had the old Dog Tax Tag from 1888 and there was also a problem with that item. He dug it from a town called Hillsboro, ND. but yet the Dog Tax Tag never specified what State or Town it was made for. The only thing to go by was it was an original piece that was from this existing town since it was found there and it was Dakota Territory back in 1888 since North Dakota didn't become a State until 1889. That is the only reason Rick got so much for the item. Yes, you are right about old Dog Tax Tags this old being a rarity to find but you have to remember that you have to find someone to buy the item from you and $200 for a Dog Tax Token is well worth selling it since it is just a piece of Brass. I use to be just like you with the Tokens but every time someone finds one, it just makes them that more common and I decided to cash some of them in since you never know if someone out there will find a hoard of them and make them worth very little. Thanks for the reply and comments and Good Luck and HH on your next trip out.
